I am going to see Yes, in concert tomorrow night in Birmingham, (that's UK, not Alabama) , always one of my favorite English rock bands, have always liked their brand of music, and the skill they have with their musical instruments and the voice of Jon Anderson. So what music do you enjoy. As Cristina say's, ' Tick your it ' ps if you want to see who I am talking about look here. http://yesworld.com/Stay Well Paul "If life is a waste of time, and time is a waste of life, then lets all get wasted and have the time of our lives."Edited by Lord Simpo on 07/02/03 07:58 AM (server time). Oh my, there are so many types of music I enjoy. I love Celtic music (Clannadh, Chieftans, the Rankins, Leahy), Queen is my ultimate favourite (Freddie Mercury was my vocal hero), Edith Piaf, Loreena McKinnet, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Fats Waller, The Allman Brothers, The Byrds, David Bowie, the list goes on, and on, and on. Just like an Energizer Bunny!! [wmile] Hugs, Kat

Oh dear......................I always hate this question because it always sends me into a rant about the dreadful quality of music which is thrust at us wherever we go.
In the supermarket, dreadful pop, in the diy store same dreadful pop, Restaurant, dreadful pop, Pub, dreadful pop, every radio station in the country dreadful pop, apart from classic FM which insists on employing radio 1 tactics and employing there elderly rejects, who in turn insist on playing dreadful classical pop. Of course every vehicle that passes the house thunders out the same dreadful pop. Every tv advert, every radio advert, nightclubs, summer fayres, fete and gala, the same dreadful pop.
One would almost think that 4 young men guessing at playing guitars and drums were the only music available to mankind and all that was ever known. Where are the brass bands, military bands, yodellers, Opera, symphonic, incidental descriptive. Why did the violin, cello banjo accordion, clarinet, trumpet oboe become redundant, why is an ill played loud jangling guitar fed through some hideous electronic effecs pedal so desirable? Why cant people realize that we don't all ADORe dreadful POP
But anyway, I'm not going to rant, I am over that a long time ago, I'm OK now......!
Actually adore Beethoven, as the supreme composer, Lizst as the supreme performer, chopin as the piano exquisite artisan, and best singer songwriter ever Jake Thackray
Sorry Paul

"When god is around the angels play Bach, when he is elsewhere they play Mozart."
That one always made me smile. I think Mozart holds the keys to joy and satisfaction in classical music, all 12 of them.
Believe it or not I studied music at college. Jazz became my thing as a result. I feel that to some extent the Miles Davis generation reinvented music just as Bach laid down the Western world's accepted musical norms in the first instance. Miles Davis' "Kind Of Blue" is clealry a work of genius and inspiration not to be missed.
That said, I do enjoy a lot of what Alan so quaintly calls pop. At just 38 years I'm much to old for the most recent popular reinventions - garage, jungle, rap, hip hop (no doubt all already out of date) but then this is what mature people would have said of Miles Davis in the 50's and 60's....
The music industry is in a mess, a very big mess spelling financial ruin for many record labels. This is becuase quick profit has become the sinlge factor defining musical success. Music is, or at least should be, art. Art and the quick profit culture cannot easily co-exist.
Incidentally Paul, Rick Wakeman of the band YES is a hugely talented pianist. His 'pop' version of George Gershwin's "Rahpsody in Blue" is something to behold. Hmmm, now then Gerswhin, surely the genius of the early popular song? Or would that be Cole Porter? Arrrrgh......
(Kat - check the writers of the Ella Fitzgerald songs you like best - Gershwin? Porter? Of course!)
Then there's Lennon and McCartney and Paul Simon, how does one choose???.........
There's my ranting then (or should that be 'raving'?) all done :)

Hey Kat! I am also a big fan of Loreena's! I saw her in concert a few years back when she came to New England. What a show! She has the voice of an angel and always manages to bring on the tears. Going to see Tracy Chapman in a few weeks! peace Kathy "The most beautiful stones have been tossed by the wind and washed by the waters and polished to brilliance by life's strongest storms."

Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue is one of my favourites. Well, OK, Gershwin is one of my favourites. And Cole Porter's lyrics are so incredibly well laid out. Very often, his melody lines and phrasing mimic speech, which, considering that he wrote for music theatre, is understandable. Although, for the time, I think it was somewhat innovative, as he wrote at a time when the beautiful singing voice was almost more important than what the lyrics were saying. I love singing his stuff. Kat
