If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

Hi everyone!!
My name is Sally and last week I was diagnosed with AS. I would be really greatful for any suggestions especially on how to start the day when you're in so much pain.
I live in Perth Western Australia and was wondering if anyone knew of any support groups in WA.
Thanks heaps,
Sal

Welcome, Sal:
I hope that you will visit the NSD forum. For the majority of those doing this diet, getting started in the mornings is much easier.
Best to You, John

Hi Sal! Welcome to the best support site for AS you'll ever find I know you'll get lots of great help here. The people here are simply amazing! I think John's suggestion is a great way to start. My advice may sound trivial but the first thing I do in the morning is to take a real hot shower to loosen up all those painful, stiff muscles and joints and then I find something to laugh about everyday and often as I can. Humor has really kept my sanity (or insanity ) in check over the years, especially during my most painful times. Good luck to you in your search for better health peace Kathy "The most beautiful stones have been tossed by the wind and washed by the waters and polished to brilliance by life's strongest storms."

Hi Sal Diet,shower--try the very hot and for the last 2-3 very cold , if you can stand it--stretching exercises, start slow and move up the intensity. i know it's a schlep and it hurts, but its the only way. I have also found that taking the meds at night helps with the stiffness in the morning.

I think we all have different ideas on how we all handle the pain whether it be in the morning or throughout the day or night. This site has alot of wonderful people on it who are always suggesting great ideas. So give them a go and see which one suits you. I know i myself i am rather stiff in the morning (so to speak) but that doesnt hang around for to long with 2 kids in the house. Basically try to keep moving in the morning i know it hurts but think of how you feel once you loosen up. Anyway i hope you enjoy this site i know do. take care adii

Hi Sal (and Adii), and welcome to KA! I live in Perth too, would you believe?? There is a very good support-cum-exercise group held every Monday week at Shenton Park hospital. If you contact the AFWA, also in Shenton Park, they'll give you all the details. There's also a support group called "LINK", which is run through the AFWA for anyone with any sort of arthritis, etc., and it also has regular meetings, as well as a telephone support network. If you want any more info, please feel free to PM me. Best wishes, Sue

Hi, Sally, and welcome to KA! About that morning stiffness, do you take any muscle relaxers? It won't prevent the morning stiffness entirely but may help you get through the night and not be quite so stiff in the morning. I'm on one of the newer disease modifiers so don't have to go through the routine of limbering up, can actually get out of bed instead of rolling and yiping, but back in the days before I was on these meds I can remember crab walking around the house until I was stable enough to get in a hot shower, as hot as I could stand.
