I have no opinion one way or the other regarding homeopathy, but isn't this basically the same concept as a vaccine? A vaccine is made from the agent from which it is supposed to protect you and can produce, at least in the short term, symptoms of that related to that agent/illness. A homeopathic preparation, per my very limited understanding, is made from a substance that produces symptoms very similar to the actual illness with which the individual is plagued.
Interestingly enough, according to the Wikipedia (take it for what it's worth) entries for each, both came into being/prominence in 1796.
