Hi Jonathan,... an American I presume?

Chambers College Dictionary:
defence (U.S. defense), di-fens', n. a
defending. means of protection: an accused person's plea, or (law) his party.

Dave,

I searched the PubMed site (American Library of Congress) using low carbohydrate diet and found a great many abstracts on the subject. There is considerable interest in this diet with regard to the treatment of type 2 (adult onset) diabetes, it appears to be an effective therapy. But none of the papers I looked at made any mention of the worries you mention, compromise of the intestinal flora. It does not seem to be an issue. Interestingly one of the abstracts suggested that the reason the diet works for type 2 diabetics is because humans evolved through the ice ages on a low carb diet and so we became naturally insulin resistant, our metabolisms are not suited to the consumption of a lot of carbs. So if Dr Calin has really got new information it will be most interesting. I would not like to think that a leading world expert is bullshitting!

They also serve who have to use a straw

'Then you should say what you mean,' the March Hare went on. 'I do,' Alice hastily replied; 'at least - at least I mean what I say - that's the same thing , you know.' 'Not the same thing a bit!' said the Hatter.

Hi Dave (and fellow Manxie )

Your post has got me thinking on many levels, and whilst I can see that you're maybe concerned at people's health status for giving the NSD/LSD a throw, I DO think that your going to a specialised unit is maybe giving you the 'halo' effect?

Calin might have done some good work (has he? any offers on that one anyone??) and maybe he has highlighted potential pitfalls of the diet (has he??) well, I dunno (there are lots of documented positives also) but trying to place myself as someone who was (a) newly diagnosed (given or take the 15yrs that may take for some folk, especially if they're female) and/or (b) just been referred to the specialised unit (which would no doubt depend on resources, or lack of them - to the people at the back, this means MONEY) and (c) (I would bloody well hope) was open-minded.....

I really doubt that living through the above, I'd end up thinking this guy had ALL the answers. Sure, it's specialised (do I HAVE to give you one very distinguished doc's version on that??) but WHAT about the quality of the information they are giving out?

Couple of challenges for you:

(1)-If this course is so sh*t hot, why isn't it rolled out in every city, or at least have a local centre - at least several in the country as opposed to ONE?

(2)-what about the other 50 weeks of the year??

Scenario two for you: say I'd just found KickAS and decided to try the diet whilst waiting for referral? Realising how wonderful the diet is, I have to listen to Dr Calin disputing it....and KNOWING how it feels to be virtually drug-free and have my life back - well, hey, I'm not exactly going to sit at the back saying nothing am I?
I would be MAD AS HELL that this hadn't been brought to my attention before and MAD AS HELL that anyone else would want to even get in the way of making what is an entirely personal choice - given all the *&^%$ floating around about low/no carb/starch diets I'm not suprised some people give up before the first hurdle.

In the current climate, it DOES require a leap of faith. But LOOK where it might take you!!!!

Looking forward to the day, hopefully not so far away, when:

(a) Docs have entered medicine on the basis of vocation and not elitism (Go Jeanna!!)

(b) Where said docs will take up research that was previously dropped (as previously no money or kudos to be made from picking up the research of others - even though some docs might be prepared to think beyond the box, and to have their patients benefit in the meantime) - away from the no-probs funding research into new meds, and new gene studies which of course are important, but whilst promising status and reward for the doc doing them, will make little impact on the patients they are actually researching.

(c) Given the already noted effect of diet on RA, mental health (schizophrenia, ADD, anxiety, panic attacks), prisoners (>40% actuality of reoffending if given more veggies!!!), and the effect of too many carbs on causing pancreatic cancer, not to mention diabetes and CHD. Whoops, don't forget acrylamide found in fried carbs - hey, can you imagine a drug which had this potential effect STILL being on the market whilst it was investigated?? Thought not!

So Dave, would you like fries with that??

Take care,

Jan

Listen, it'll take a while before the NSD/LSD is endorsed by doctors. Why? Because it's too simple, and you don't have to take any drugs to be on it, and the pharmaceutical companies that pay their ways for seminars and such can't patent Black Angus Steak.

I swear, the only diet advice I've EVER heard from a doctor is to "eat better". They're too busy trying to get to the next patient to take the time to lay something out for you, and

I was told I would have to take (at the least) prescription strength naproxen for the rest of my life when I was 18. I was told that my spine would fuse. I've heard people on these boards that have had hips replaced in their 30s. Gee, do you think I'm worried about my intestinal flora? Give me a freakin break man! My ENERGY is BETTER than before. I FEEL BETTER than before. My FLEXIBILITY is BETTER than before. I've been off of NSAIDs for over a year now. The only time I've had to take Aleve or anything is due to Wisdom tooth pain, and they're coming out in two weeks!

I eat most fruits and vegs, dairy, nuts and meat. I avoid anything with food starch and flour, whole grains and whatnot.

So, if I feel better and I have a healthy glow and I'm happy and I drop dead someday out of the blue because I haven't been eating starch, would that really be worse than having problems standing up straight, bending over or even walking for the rest of my long, miserable, but with "happy-digestive-flora" life?

I'll stop the NSD/LSD as soon as science gives me something that's as easy to do with the same amount of side-effects, which is practically none.

PS - I admit, I'm sort of a new age nazi, but don't blame me. Blame the HMO doctors that couldn't do a d@mn thing to treat my illness. I swear, in this new era of lawsuits and restrictive insurance companies, the HMO doctors have become as closed-minded as a Spanish Inquisitor during the Renaissance.

Ok, that's enough out of me for now.

Take care all!

Cody.
