Hi everyone... Hope everyone is okay tonight...as I get ready for bed. I am so tired. I have had to start taking Vicodin...aka Hydrocodone for my heel pain. I could barely stand it today. All I did was run over [not literally...] to pick up Gianna from school..and on the way back ...I could barely pull myself out of the car. My heels were tender as always..but I could not get out of the car...the pain was excruciating. I had not felt that BAD yet. I felt like an elderly who was made to do three marathons..in a row! Gianna was shocked and looked at me in disbelief. I think she thought I was playing around..till she realized it was no joke. I could barely walk...or drag my feet to the front door...and my parking is right in front of my house. I wanted to crawl to the door thats how bad it was. I wanted to cry..but I bit my lip as the girls were in great spirits. They are so excited about the Texas Kickas party...Gianna told my mom and all her friends at school that she was going to a kickas party in LosAngeles..thus confusing it with Addison...LOL She's packing for our hotel stayover..and is quite excited. Anywho...I had bought some good cushioned slip on shoes..with a nice support heel...but they didnt even help. I couldnt even walk to the kitchen. I went straight to my bed...pulled my quilt over and slid my tortured tootsies into bed and propped them up. Every step was like somebody getting a rock and hammering it into the balls of my feet ..and my arch being stretched like silly putty and my heels being hammered away as well. Feels as if I am pressing a good 300lbs on them when I walk. Tremendous pressure on the heels. I popped a couple of Vicodin and a soma. I also BEGGED for mercy from my children. Fortunately they knew I was serious and they hustled into my room..and watched tv in my room. Art rubbed my feet and said they feel odd. He said that for some strange reason the padding on my feet feels very thin. He showed me his feet..which are some pretty scary looking feet...but that's a whole other story !! But his feet are padded nicely. My feet arent. They hurt so bad. Just wondered if anyone else has this problem wiht the padidng on their feet? Luckily on the 1st I get my health insurance..but until then there isnt much I can do. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I can feel at the balls of my feet some real hard spots in the middle ...and it's not a bunion or callous. It feels like bone...hard. Take care one and all...this Buggaroni is hitting the sack... one step at a time... hugs to all]]] Toodles! Angie

Ah, the dratted heel pain. I once hobbled my way, cane in hand, through a one week cruise that I had been looking forward to all year There are a couple of things that might help. One is the easy one, since heel pain due to arthritis is caused by a shortened achilles tendon, stretch out that tendon every day (my PT taught me this). Lean against a wall, about a foot or so away, hands on wall, and stretch first one calf and then the other, repeat for a minute or so. The other one my sister has had because her heel pain is due to a bone spur - - but it works with arthritis folk too - - and that is a shot of cortisone directly into the heel, a quick fix if you want instant relief that hopefully would last for a couple of months. But do those stretches!!!! I tried all the Dr. Scholl's stuff, ice, heat, etc., but nothing worked but the stretches. We also lose padding on the bottom of our feet with this thing, so that's why your feet may look a bit peculiar. Cheryl Dogs don't care if the house is messy

Thanks Cheryl.... Ever since you mentioned the stretches...I do them in the evenings and in the mornings..and it feels good. It just seems anytime I sit down or stand still and then have to resume standing up or walking..it is excruciating. It is very frustrating. MY upper body is moving...though the lower half is not! So that is common with AS? The padding of the feet? I didnt know that. It felt strange feeling Art's cushioned feet..while mine felt like there was bony growths or spurs, or something. It is quite painful. I'm off to wobble Gianna to school, and hobble back home.... Hugs]]] Toodles! Angie

I have tried the stretching to and it has not had a great impact. AT work I have a desk where I stand at and a desk to sit at since I cannot sit for very long without really bad pain in my back. Since I started this a few months ago, my heels have been getting worse but it is the lesser of two evils. Back pain v Heel pain.
Does your heel pain go into your ankles, or rather since they hurt, do they than cause problems with your ankles?
Anyhow, I hope you are feeling better.
I read a great quote the other day "Fall down seven times, get up eight".

Being an "X" Florida boy, I used go everywhere without shoes. I dreaded wearing them as it was so blasted hot down there. A few years after my AS dx I could not go barefoot anylonger. Seems the bottoms of my feet could not take it anymore. LOL Angie, I bet your hubbies feet can not compare to these fugly things I got to walk around on!!!! AHAHAHAHAHAHA Bone spurs can sure cause a ton of pain in the balls of the feet. Seems they show up right where the most pressure is placed on them. My toes feel at times like someone sneaks up on them with a hammer and smashes them, hurting like you just wouldnt believe. I will yell OUCH and Monica will look at me and say "HammerToe?" As soon as it appeared it would be over. Sneak, smash, split...that quick. It actually makes me jump a mile in my seat when it happens. Although I have not experienced what you are going through with your feet believe me I feel every cringe you are going through. Bob Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Behold the beauty of Orca Art

Angie, You describing your feet make mine hurt. Have you asked the doctor to look at yours? Does Arthur think yours look different than before or is he just noticing your cute but painful feet You'd think the painkillers would help that heel pain a little bit anyway How you keep going after those two little tornado's with those poor feet is beyond me. Mothers are tough take care, linda

Since you're not on one of the new DMARDS it was the only help I could offer. Arava has pretty much put a stop to most of the heel pain - - but I still have thin little paddings on the bottom of my feet. But heel pain is one of the markers of AS, and we all seem to have foot problems here, so can't help much, Ms. Bug. You could try the cortisone shot in the heel but the idea of it gives me the willies The one in the palm of my hand was torture enough but if I got desperate enough I'd have it done again. Hi Cheryl! Thanks for the tips..much appreciated...I had hoped the stretches would take care of it...but seems to be a constant issue now. I see my new Rheumy on the 4th to check on my feet again, and I should be able to see my orthopedic doc on the 1st to see what the deal is with them. It just is so painful everyday..like the back...you try to ignore the pain but it just keeps reminding you with every step you take. Cortisone shot you say??? EEKEKK!! My mom had one on her hand for carpal..and she was in pain afterwards. It did help the swelling but it's back again. I have had them before...for my knee and they helped tremendously. But there isnt much padding there...I have a feeling I'd be crying on the way home.... Hugs to ya'..[[[]]] Toodles! Angie

I like the quote..that would be me!! I have pain in my right ankle, but my left foot is the worse of my feet. It is relentless these last couple of months. It stops for a day when it feels like it..only moderate pain, then whammo it's torture time at the Buggy house. My right ankle appears to have some type of bony growth. My gp's asst felt it and said it was due to the AS probably. Now on the bottom of my feet is what feels like some type of bony growth. Art said it feels like calcification...ohhh As...much too generous with bony growth on Buggy !! Take care.... PS..it started with ankle pain only at night about 6-7 months ago. Then these last couple of months heel pain..and my arch of my foot..and the balls of the feet are now very very painful as well. I cant find any shoe...well made or not that help me. Toodles! Angie

HI Bob... I get the hammertoe pain at night...just random "slam a hammer on my toes" pain. It's awful...just last about a minute or two, then vanishes. But it makes me squeal !! I've never been a shoeless buggy..but lately it has had to come to that at home...slipper city...that's it inside. Outside...ahh..time for me to pull out the shoe collection lol. But believe it or not...I saw some awesome lace up ankle boots...black leather cute shoes...and my feet hurt so bad..I rejected them. Art almost fainted from shock!! As for the feet....I had him rub my feet and I took a "gander" at his....Lord...Bob...I think I killed my pumice file..and I had the sloughing cream..but can you believe the tube popped out of my hands and ran like the wind in "fear"??? LOL heheh ! Hugs ]] Toodles! Angie
