Laura,
There is nothing wrong with the avocado. I like them very much, to make some guacemole or a nice salad. Only I read in the Sinclair book that they are high in starch and she advised to leave them out of the diet. Should you be doing the diet and eating avocado's without any negative results: go on but be careful.

Thanks Gerald. I guess I should have done the iodine test on it. We eat avocadoes like mad in this house.
I'm just starting on a starch free diet for RA.
I'm allergic to dairy so it is so limited as to what I eat.
I'm sure I'll learn alot from this website.

Thanks for the information on the papaya....will definitely put that on my list on my next trip to the Sun Harvest Grocery store! If it will help out wonderful!!

Gerard...where you treated with antibiotics for the Pylori bacteria?? How long ago did you have it?? Also...did it change what you could digest and could not afterwards?? My stomach is so irritable. The slightest attack from somethin that does not settle well---kablam....it feels like someone karate-chops me across the abdomen and I double over in agony. I start sweatin....my head starts spinning....and I am frozen in pain unable to move. It lasts for about 10 minutes or so...then it's gone. A awful situation it is! I had eliminated so much since the gallstones...because I simply do not want those attacks. I dont get them as often anymore, but when they do come around...I pray for mercy!!

Dont mean to drill you.....just wanted another opinion from someone who has had pylori and what their experience has been like....

Take care....

Toodles!

Gerard, Angie, Laura et al,

enjoy your avocados by all means! They only have a trace of starch, less than 0.1 % by weight and that should be no problem. For comparison, bread has about 30%. The iodine test is not quantitive, and Carol Sinclair must be misleading here.

Bilko:

Are you sure that avocado is safe? Have you (or somebody on this forum) check it? I love avocados ("aguacates" in spanish), and would like eat them, but staying very strict in this moment, a new flare scares me. Can you say me how many starch is on avocado in comparison with lettuce, raw carrot or almonds? If avocado were safe, would be a good calorie source. Thanks.

Pello, my source for starch content is a standard work, McCance & Widdowson's 'The Composition of Foods' published here in UK by The Royal Society of Chemistry and a government ministry.

Avocado, Trace - less than 0.1 g/100g
Lettuce, Trace
Carrot, 0.2 g/100g
Almond, 2.7 g/100g

Eventually we hope to put this information on all foods in a foodies kama sutra, but John has to discuss first with the administrators.

Thanks Bilko, I'm trying to figure out this starch thing and I don't have any books yet to refer to. What is the starch content we should be shooting for? That is, if we had a list of foods and their starch content, what is the highest amount we should allow in our daily diet?
Thanks, laura

Laura,

The London AS diet, the low starch diet, aims to eliminate staple foods with high starch contents; bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, cake, and I would add pulses. All these foods have starch contents in double figures, typically 30%, and as great as 80% in the case of wheat based breakfast cereals.

The no starch diet is more radical and aims to eliminate foods with low starch contents such as banana, 1.7%. Those whose guts have been compromised by NSAIDs, or who suffer with irritable bowel disorders often find they have to resort to this.
