Hi Bilko,
That is great news !! Thanks.

Somehow my intuition said the avocado is safe cause it is a fruit and why should a plant store energy in something that eventually falls or is taken off (the starch in the banana is only there cause it still has to be converted into sugar during the riping process and it happens to be that we eat "unripe" bananas over here, as I'm sure you know).
Another reason to stay alert, even towards a book that is very helpful and in which the starch contents of some other vegatables is given.

I would love to have the list of starch contents on the site.

Ugghhh ... there is a character in a Graham Green novel, on the run from the security police in a south american country, who hides out for a couple of weeks in a banana warehouse, with nothing to eat except green bananas awaiting export ... ugghh... how can you do it?

Angie,
I indeed had also the antibiotica treatment (three years ago) for the Pylori and the resulting ulcer in the "twelve fingered intestine" (probably this is a strange translation from the Dutch, I mean the bowel directly beneath the stomach). I never had any reaction to which food I was able to digest after the treatment. The only effect I had was a fungal infection in the throat because my immune system was a bit messed up by the antibiotics. But that was easily treated.

I'm a bit puzzled with your complaints, they sound pretty awful, poor you. Somehow I have the idea it is not the stomach that is bothering you. But hey I'm not a doctor it is just a vague feeling. My girl friend however has become a vegatarian because she has problems digesting meat. When she eats red meat it doesn't digest and it stays for a long time in the stomach giving a puky feeling for nearly a day or so. Fish and seefood are the only animal proteins she is able to digest. So therefore I thought you're problems maybe from beneath the stomach. Still from the gall bladder maybe. Just a feeling, for what it is worth.

Huhhh,
I don't eat unripe bananas, that's sick and starchy . I mean that over here in the northern hermisphere we eat banana's that are shipped unripe and we hope they will ripe underway and in our house. In (for instance) Indonesia however they keep them longer in the trees and they don't eat them until they have little black spots all over. These are the good ones (very, very swweet) which I even on diet will eat ( for sure since your earlier post in this thread).
Gerard.
(BTW what is the swimming temperature in Serpentine?)

Todays swimming temperatue was 16 C. I used to post todays temperature as my signature, but when it started climbing clear of freezing it was too boring.

On the bananas .. on the old forum I once started a thread titled 101 things to do with a banana, and started it off with a description of laying naked face down on a rug coquetishly peeling a banana ... the sort of thing they show in girlie mags. If we ever do The best of kickas.org threads that will be in it.

Hi all.

I'm really new to these threads... just posted a short story of "me" last night for the first time. I am both new and old to AS in many ways. It runs through my family like a freight train. Now I have had my first major flare up and still recovering.

I don't know enough about the NSD or any AS related diet really, that's why I'm here learning but I just had to jump in with some info on the avocado and banana question that is important to think about.
It is a fact that many of us with AS are in and out of doctors offices, hospitals and undergoing numerous treatments and tests (and lets not forget we still visit the dentist regularly too).. All of these visits expose us to latex and increase our chances of becoming latex sensitive if not out-right allergic.
I became latex sensitive about 5 or 6 years ago. Eating the following foods can actually enhance your sensitivity to latex and turn a simple visit to the doctor's office into a life threatening event. They are: avocados, potatoes, bananas, tomatoes, chestnuts, kiwi fruit, and papaya.
If you aren't latex sensitive yet, visiting doctors or hospitals in the future could allow this condition to creep in unaware. It would be wise to ask your doctor now to avoid using latex during your visits and for testing procedures. They have many alternatives so don't be afraid to ask.
The condition of being latex allergic was once thought to be confined only to those who actually made the latex products and those with spinal bifida (because of their very early and often exposure to latex), but it is showing up in all classes of peoples just because of their exposure level. The more you visit doctors and hospitals, the more test and procedures preformed, the more you are exposed to latex, the higher the chance you have of developing this condition.
Those of us with AS already have so many things to contend with, we don't need to invite more.
For future reference a few of the symptoms of latex allergy are: skin rashes; hives; flushing; itching; nasal, eye, or sinus symptoms; asthma; and shock. See a doctor at once for symptoms of asthma, wheezing, difficulty breathing or shock. Hope this helps.

How very fascinating, Winona! Thank you for posting that infomation, and WELCOME! We have a great time learning together and sharing our experiences, good or bad. I hope you will find lots of information to get you started with an AS-altering diet!

Looking forward to your input,

Sharon

I was lucky in so many ways. I had just a couple of weeks ago been tested and found to be HLA-B27 positive. That doesn't automatically mean AS so I started researching. I had a few days on the internet before the flare-up that sent me to the hospital two+ weeks ago. So I had already seen a mention of diets and things to avoid. I am/was a Pepsi-holic at the time and saw that was a big no-no. When I ended up in the hospital on big time pain meds I took that as the perfect opportunity to quit drinking soda since my main symptom of caffeine withdrawal is painful headaches. I was on max IV injections of Nubain for several days so I never had even a tiny bit of a headache! Silver lining story.

So, giving up anything else will be a piece of cake since my main vice was Pepsi.

Thanks for the welcome... I'm sure to be a regular here.

Winona

PS... The name is "me", so glad you like it!

Hi ,
I took a six month course of Azufidine around 6 years ago. Was very ill when I started and felt very fine when it ended. It is not the same as taking antibiotics, and I read a study where it said 40% respond well to it I was one of those who did respond well to it. However it falls under a DMARD drug if you have a problem with taking one of those.

I know....my complaints are quite puzzling to me as well!
My gastroentologist said it's my large intestine that is giving me all the problems. It is very irritated for some reason. She cannot pinpoint reason why....dx of colitis, gastritis and IBS. I cannot attribute it to NSAIDS because I started getting like this during my pregnancy in 2000. My stomach is so tender sometimes it hurts to just touch it when I lay down. It is not a good feeling. My gastro said it's the colitis and gastritis that cause the tenderness. I dont get heartburn or anything like that .....Thank the Lord! Janet and I chatted last time and I thought perhaps it is more food allergies that I suffer from and with the AS they just magnify......who knows!

I have been stayin away from the red meat and eating plenty of fish, chicken and fruit. This is going to get expense......my girls attack all my fruit everytime I open my fridge!! Heheh! I give them their bin with all their goodies, but somehow....Momma's stuff always looks more enticing to them in the end!!

I am DEFINITELY happy to hear that I can eat Avocadoes!!! Yahooey!!
I love them......and am glad they will be on my shopping list tomorrow!!

take care.....

Toodles!
Angie
