Hi Guys

Do those of you on a strict NSD diet drink alcohol? I gave it up for 6 months but would like to be able to enjoy a few drinks on occassion, has anyone been successful while still enjoying a drink?

If so, would vodka be the best option? I notice beer doesnt contain starch according to the list, but it does contain gluten so i assume its best to stay away?

Cheers 🍻

I can occasionally can have a low carb wine/spritzer kind of drink. They are gluten free also. One brand is Truly and also White Claw. They are usually lime, grapefruit flavors etc. These are the only ones I can tolerate but ideally, I do better without. Good luck!

Just a thought. If you have mould colonies in your gut or other organs then if you drink alcohol they will get food and become active. In that case the mould may produce toxins that create inflammation among other things.

Many alcohols may contain mycotoxins from mould since the fruit or grains that they are made from are mouldy to begin with and not good enough for consumption; they get sent for fermentation instead.

So if sometimes a glass of vodka triggers a flare and sometimes it doesn't then it might not even be the alcohol but really is the random presence of mycotoxins.

Good luck!

Thank you for breaking that down. I’m just learning about molds, Candida, and the bacteria in our digestive system. I had never heard some of this before, certainly not from my rheumatologist. Thanks again!

Perhaps more of gastroenterology thing than rheumatology.

A gastroenterologist will no as much about toxicology as a GP knows about nutrition.

So far I've had wine, gin, scotch, and vodka and all were fine. I haven't had beer since I started NSD so I cannot comment. I do find, however, that it's harder to stick to NSD once I down a few drinks! I've had a few alcohol-induced fails (hmmmm.....pizza) so be careful out there!!

As for "mould colonies in your gut" being "fed" by alcohol, that seems unlikely. Alcohol is a by-product of fermentation. It's what's left after organisms consume carbohydrates like sugar. It's not their food source, it's their waste. What feeds yeasts, bacteria and other organisms in our guts is carbs - sugar, starch, fibre, etc.

Suspected USpA. HLA B27, xray, u/sound, blood tests all -ve. Ancient history of plantar fasciitis, SI joint pain, knee arthritis. Recent history of tendinitis, neck pain, debilitating finger pain and stiffness (especially mornings). No diagnosis, no meds.

2010 - stopped eating dairy
2012 - stopped eating wheat
2014 - stopped eating all grains
Jan 2017 - discovered NSD - 98% improvement in symptoms, continually amazed by my results, wish I'd found kickAS sooner

Tequila!
Someone once told me it was pro-biotic but pre-biotic might be closer.

Agree with iXnae grains wheat dairy. This has of late been more beneficial to me than NSD approach. 21 years ago it was NSD all the way. Took 6 months till I felt relief and that was despite drinking beer (gluten soup) and eating dairy. Fasting periodically and sporadically.. and occasional antibiotics were some of the best tools for me.

Since the gut is the whole deal ..my metaphor has been the farm. Prepare by killing the weeds, then grow the plants beneficial to you. the Modern farm may not be a good metaphor.

where I live... surrounded by fields of corn and beans(soy that is) sprayed constantly with an insidious, ubiquitous chemical that damages gut bugs. Probably the old school farm might be better discouraging predators, parasites and weeds through incentive programs favouring the positive. Many species of critters. Not Luddite. Less Corperate. Definitely, more labor intensive. Chickens that lay the eggs you need are just as dumb as ever, but eat things that don't come out of a truck as much.

Regards,
Ike

You're right Kellybells. Alcohol is a byproduct of fermentation. I should have said that alcohol indirectly feeds fungus by effecting our blood sugar levels.

So what exactly are you saying then should I drink alcohol or not?
