Hi, dmx07:

I am 63 years old and AS began when I was 20, about 2 years before the HLA B27 connection with AS was discovered.

HEALTH,
John

No. Is found that my with rheumy diseases tend to have low Vit-D levels, but is not in any way a causal factor. Optimum levels - always under discussion as no one can agree ! - between 40 ng/mL - 85 ng/mL Mine is low.

Get your levels up to optimum levels. Vit-D needs fat to be absorbed, so take a food item with fat in it - ghee, coconut oil are both good. Anything with a 'good' fat. Will also need magnesium and a few other vits, supplements :-

Magnesium and Vitamin D Should Always Be Taken Together
www.easy-immune-health.com/magnesium-and-vitamin-d.html - Similar to Magnesium and Vitamin D Should Always Be Taken Together
When taking vitamin d, Magnesium and Vitamin D should ALWAYS be taken with the Vitamin D. Avoid the Side Effects of Vitamin D by Taking Magnesium.

I take 4000IU per day together with an assortment of the above mentioned.

Hope this helps -

Some studies claim 60% and more of the total human population on Earth are deficient in Vitamin D including those living in tropical regions with plenty of sunshine.

The exact reason is not understood.

Too much or too little vitamin D can cause premature aging and disease so as Molly said it's best to try to maintain optimal levels.

I also take 4000IU daily with food.

And to answer your question Amrit yes most autoimmune diseases are associated with low levels of Vitamin D and levels are even lower in witner when darkness rules and people spend most of their time indoors.

You still get small amounts of Vitamin D with food but not enough so that's why I decided to start a supplement.

Vitamin D can modulate your immune system and decrease disease severity.

It has anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting pro-inflammatory T cells such as Th1 and Th17 cells and by causing apoptosis in B cells.

You need to take a supplement on a regular basis for months to see benefit.

and who knows, maybe the autoimmune / autoinflammatory process causes the vitamin D levels to be low, though that may or may not be the cause.

associated, but which causes which or if either do, that is the question.
