Hi

I've been on the NSD/LSD for about 3 weeks now - started in the middle of my worst flare in 22 years.

I feel fairly lethargic since starting on the NSD/LSD, but on the other hand found the change interesting - almost like a food adventure, or visiting a country for the first time.

I am slightly better (less TMJ and neck pain), but the rest of my spine does not seem to be improving.
And as I've had flares in the past, and improved again without any dietary changes, I now want to start eliminating some other things listed as fringe foods to see if they are involved in my lack of success so far.

So I've decided to eliminate diary first and see if that has an effect. The first attempt lasted about 24 hours and then I succumbed to a yogurt temptation (unsweetened, no starch but with chia seeds and a little honey).
Also, since starting on the NSD/LSD, and even when I was trying to eliminate diary, I had some Cadbury Old Gold 70% Cocoa chocolate every day to help me get some energy. If I want to test if I need to eliminate diary, would the small amount of milk solids in dark chocolate really make a difference?

And how many times, for how many days at a time, do you eliminate something before you can really know that it has or hasn't an effect?

Hi, wordbeter:

There are several potential issues with dairy, in addition to the obvious AS "dodgy disaccharides:" The most common (least diagnosed and understood) is casein sensitivity and next is some 'lactose intolerance,' which is often below our ability to detect, unless we have a lot of milk at once.

Of course, depending upon what milk does to us, the amount of time required to get back to 'normal,' will vary. When we do not have good laboratory tests for certain things, whatever we do is subjective and will vary due to often unrecognized factors.

And, the amount of milk tolerable also depends upon the mechanism. Consider that, in the cases of extreme sprue (celiac disease), there is no level of gliadin that is acceptable; best to eliminate every bit of milk for a time, I believe.

Chances are You will see some improvement sooner than with NSD, overall, but I would give elimination of milk about 90 days and first achieve remission before reintroducing into diet.

The fatigue can sometimes be reduced by drinking a glass of concord grape juice (unsweetened) between meals (2X daily) and taking 500/1000mg glycine at same time.

HEALTH,
John

Hi John

There are things in your answer I don't understand. For example if I google "casein sensitivity" I find all kinds of symptoms apart from arthritis. Also, in many places on this forum I've seen comments indicating that we react adversely to things that increase the Klebsiella activity in our bodies within a day or a few days from eating (starch), therefore the same time-frame should apply to diary.

So surely if the diet is not helping me much as is, and it is because the diary I eat keep the Klebsiella fed, then excluding diary for a week should indicate whether it is relevant to my NSD/LSD experiment?

Anyway, I will try the grape juice with glycine advice, though it might have to be a different grape variety.
