If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

I was at the doctor's office today for a separate issue which required an MRI. During the MRI they noted that I had kidney stones. This is the first news I've heard of this, but the doc asked me if I've ever had nagging low back pain around the kidney area to which I replied "yes" and he said it's probably some of the smaller stones passing. I haven't passed any yet, but aren't kidney stones typically from a high meat diet? Interestingly enough I had posted on another topic that my genetic testing revealed that I'm had increased risk for Gout too. Although the diet has helped me get a bit better along with many others here is this a side effect of all the meat eating and I'm curious if others here have experienced this too? Kidney stones or Gout and how did they deal with it or perhaps lessening it?

I had Kidney Stones in March out of nowhere.
I went on a high meat diet about two years ago. Yeah, it could be that, or it could be the 10 - 15 grams of Vitamin C I was supplementing with daily! I just hope they don't come back.
Make sure you can get to some serious pain medication quickly if they hit. It's pretty dramatic.
As for lessening the stones, please let us know if you find anything of value! If they are stones from oxalate, everyone says to kick the spinach habit, so that's one thing I've done. I also cut way back on Vitamin C, but otherwise haven't made any changes.

Did your doctor tell you about potassium citrate? Here's a good book about kidney stones. http://books.google.com/books?id=4K4_zkm...ect&f=false A kidney stone diet is usually fairly low in meat. Do you get leg cramps? I do get low back pains but leg cramps if I eat too many purines, but migraines and insomnia are a warning that I better cut them out. I haven't found a way around it yet. I just have to avoid them. Reishi is supposed to repair internal organs so that you can deal with the uric acid, and I'm just starting that.

Hmmm......well it seems the main things I've been eating or a no go if the oxalates are what's causing them. I eat a ton of spinach, kale, animal protein, raw cacao, and nuts. Seems the basis of this diet would lead a lot of folks to have kidney stones which is why I'm curious if a lot of others on here have experienced this. What else is there for me to eat if I have to cut back on animal protein and veggies and nuts? Fat? lol.
Violeta- I don't get leg cramps or migraines. I wouldn't even know about the stones if I hadn't gone in for another issue and the MRI spotted them so my doc said, "oh by the say you have kidney stones" which was a surprise to me since I haven't had any symptoms as of yet.

Bummer!! I was just recently wondering how you were doing? Hadn't seen you here lately, and maybe a good thing? Have you been doing well otherwise, less AS pains these days? I will offer my 2 cents, but again, I am just basing this off personal experiences of mine and people I know.... I haven't been diagnosed with stones [yet] (knock on wood) but if I were looking for a "quick fix" something to help me along, I would incorporate ACV, apple cider vinegar, into my daily routine. A tablespoon mixed with water a couple times per day. It is an alkalizing miracle in my book. There is all sorts of info out there on slamming lemon juice & olive oil also to cleanse them out, but then you read horror stories of them getting stuck with that routine too. But I personally just started adding ACV into my daily diet, before or after meals. It has helped me tremendously, whenever I eat a big dinner and start burping like crazy, one spoonful in water wipes it out. Same with hiccups. I also read it is great for treating stones. And you can also switch out (or rotate) the spinach and kale for chard and lettuce, which I believe have a lot less oxalates in them. And have you had kohlrabi yet, I am obsessed with it lately, so yummy! Just checked and its low in oxaltes too. You can make a simple yummy drink with water, acv, and a little honey to carry with you through the day. Braggs, who is famous for their raw apple cider vinegar "with the mother" even sell this in health stores these days. When we are traveling, that Braggs drink is like the only bottled drink I trust in stores, though once in a while reach for a kombucha too. http://www.livestrong.com/article/32253-cure-kidney-stones-vinegar/http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/kidney_stones.html#ACV
I'm now a KICK AS (and Kick IBD) success story!! After going low starch Paleo to heal my gut, I can now eat nearly all starches, grains & foods without inflammation, flare-ups, or pain. I used a modified SCD diet approach (minus dairy! plus cacao ♥). Cheers to healing & thriving again! I blog at http://www.forestandfauna.com/about/

Hello FlexibleMind:
There is NO WAY kidney stones are caused by meat consumption or oxalates: They are caused by deep depletion of bone calcium due to the inflammatory process.
Although the composition of renal calculi includes mostly a complex of calcium oxalate (and apatite), this is manufactured right inside the bone matrix, through the de-carbonization/decomposition of the bone matrix itself; it is and should be a very disconcerting situation: Our bones are melting away--we are losing height, as our vertebrae collapse, and our bone strength is compromised considerably.
During the ten years pre-NSD, I was producing MYRIAD kidney stones--in fact at the rate of about three per year and usually at least one MAJOR one! My height decreased by five inches just due to bone matrix reduction not to mention kyphosis.
After I got my inflammation under control--about 15 years ago, I have not manufactured a single stone again, but I did learn how to eliminate them in the course of things: Eat only walnuts for at least two days and drink plenty of cranberry juice and if there are watermelon seeds available--make a tea from these and drink this often!
Passing a stone is a terrible thing, and You will know when it begins! But it is necessary.
Then avoid these in future: Supplement aggressively with calcium, zinc, copper, and vitD--and a lot of other stuff (per Dr. Joel Wallach). And EAT ALL THE GREENS YOU WANT! I had TONS of spinach and meats of course, when first starting NSD and still never produced another stone.
Cleansing diet might be in order...
HEALTH, John

Wow. Fabulous advice! I never thought of it that way! Of course. Here I am 3 inches shorter than I was 10 years ago. and I now have osteopenia too. All that calcium has to go somewhere.
Thanks so much Dragon Slayer for this info!

Hi John, The excess calcium deposits due to inflammation, I think will get deposited outside the blood vessels. Will it find way into the kidney and form stone?. Just a doubt.

@John, it sounds like Flexiblemind is eating a NSD, which is what you are suggesting gets inflammation under control, but is forming stones.

Just thought I'd add this link. http://www.webmd.com/kidney-stones/kidney-stones-causeThis article may help explain it. This may be the reason someone with AS is more likely to have kidney stones, because AS seems to have something to do with our digestive tract. I have not had kidney stones (keeping my fingers crossed), but I drink a LOT of water most days.
