Hello My name is Evan I am 21 year old from Ottawa Canada. Here is an e-mail I sent to my AnkSpon buddy in Australia. It is a good summary of how my AS went into remission and how I got off all nsaids and other prescription drugs that help short term but make things worse long term. Have a wee read if you'd like and feel free to ask questions about my experience.

Take care,
Evan

G'day Geoff

How are things? Did you end up giving CMO[Cetyl Myristoleate] a try? Any results?

I reduced my LDN [low dose neltrexon] to 1.5 mg from 4.5 mg the last time I was talking to you and still experienced some brain fog..dizzy..anxious symptoms so I went off it again. Right after I quit the LDN I started CMO along side a fairly good dose of Glucosamine Sulfate and a couple other supplements. I seemed to experience some relief for about a month. I got fed up again and started reading into nutrition a lot more, I already knew low starch diet gave some relief. Next to go was all gluten and sugars...more relief, then all night shade veggies...more relief.

Somewhere in my readings I came across someone talking about water only fasting for disease especially autoimmune. Talked to my doctor about it and he thought I was bat [*bleep*] crazy and to be honest i thought it was a little nuts too. I then came across a book called Fasting and Eating for Health: A Medical Doctor's Program for Conquering Disease by Dr. Fuhrman (he's chummy with dr Oz and dr Weil). This book really changed my view on western med.. I then started looking for clinics that will do a supervised water only fast, I only found one in north america called True North Health Centre located in Santa Rosa California and ran by Dr. Goldhamer(who actually interned with a doctor who supervised fasts in Australia 30 years ago).

So after many over the phone conversations with True North I took a wee trip to California to Check It out. I ended up staying a month doing a two day pre fast (fruit and veg only) then a 14 day water only Fast followed by a re-feed [day of fresh juice, a day of raw veg and fruit, a day of raw and steamed veg, and finally a week of a very strict vegan diet with no added salt oils and sugars (even no honey, maple syrup, olive oil, gluten ex..)].

I'm happy to say the results were amazing ..SI joints released, thought they were fused. shoulder healed, joint mobility increased, muscles relaxed, irritable bowel and colitis symptoms disappeared brain fog gone, depression gone, mood swings gone...the list goes on. Another strange thing that happened was old injuries from the rugby and football days that didn't bother me started to hurt intensely for about 5 days then went away..almost like my body was healing them..I have read this can happen. Also I am off all over the counter and prescription Drugs!

As you can see I am doing well sticking to healthy eating (not completely vegan but try to eat naturally fed meat or a lot less animal protein.. and no oil salt or sugar) reduced alcohol intake. Also I have started a regular exercise routine mostly just cardio right now..haven't been able to jog in a couple years now..as each day goes by i am able to run or bike longer and longer.

Thanks again for all your help with AS..I think I have found something that will work for me (at least for now) and hopefully be able to stay off those crazy drugs.

Water fasting is not for everyone and may sound crazy at first, as it did to me, but It actually works and in a short period.

Cheers,

Evan

So there is a little brief summary of my experience. It is recommended that one should be medically supervised if fasting longer than 5 days and one should not be on any medicine including natural supplements while fasting.

Feel Free to Email me with any questions at evan.donnelly@hotmail.com just please make sure you put ANKSPON or something related in subject bar..or can msg me on here.

Go kick some AS

Evan,
Thank you so much for posting!
I am still trying to figure out whether I will be able to get rid of mine merely by diet. I am at the stage of just realizing that nightshades could be the devil, as well as the starches. Still my usual pain after 5 day since the last tomatoe, and suspecting I might have to take more drastic measures soon.

The thing I really wonder when I read about your fast is: Does one really need a doctor for this, or is it enought just to have a friend there to keep an eye on you? If you know how to break the fast too, copying your model, anyone should be able to do it without paying to be stay at a health center.

Hi Loha,

To be honest I did 14 days and I was completely fine..kidneys were working a little hard but not out of the normal range. the only concern is your electrolytes becoming to low..this requires blood tests. even if you were to do a 2 day steamed raw veg and fruit, followed by a 5 day water fast, followed by 1 day of fresh juice or smoothies, then 1 day of raw veg and fruit, then into your new normal healthy diet you will see great results(make sure you chew your food till its a paste).

you will find results from just a dietary change but the water fast will speed these results up. it is a waste of time to fast any less than 3 days. So if your in general good health beside the AS and you quit all medicine a few days before a fast you should be able to do 5 days without a doc. I personally would perhaps fast for 7 days in the future with out supervision.

Take Care

Great,
Thank you for your thoughts on this. I am a soon 30 yrs female in good health, doing my best never to have to start taking drugs. Or at least not for long.

I thought I would start with a 3-days, then another 7 days a month or two later.

Did you really break your fast with fruit juices? I have heard that is hard on your stomach. Dragonslayer recommends scrambled eggs.

What was the philosophy of the people who helped you with the fast? That you were starving out the klebsiella bacteria to a new low level forever? That your immune system took on the normal behavior?

Thanks,
Loha

I was at a strictly vegan no salt sugar or oils added centre. juice was not hard on my stomach. I drank a 24oz glass spread out over an hour span and had 4 in a day. From what I've studied and from my own experience eggs can actually have a negative effect on your digestive system more and more people have shown sensitivities to either egg whites egg yellows or both. Dragonslayer seems like a very intelligent individual and may have had great results with eggs and seen people experience great results with eggs but personally i would not take that route.

They are not sure what about the water fast does to help with AS. We believed for my situation I Had a leaky gut syndrome and by temporary shutting down my digestive system this allowed my gut to heal. I have had a recent Klebsilla stool test and very low levels were reported.

A young 29 year old healthy woman will have no probs doing a 7 day fast! And that's great your not on any drugs..water fasting is also a great preventative!

The centre I was at recommended I do a 7 day fast every year and a longer fast every 5.

best of luck

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! So wonderful to read! I am a full supporter of fasting!

I had great results with a 14 day fresh juice & water fast (fruits/veggies/greens/herbs, lots of water) last year. It was a major turning point for me! It was after I had been on the low/no starch diet for 5 months. Then I did a little reboot, 3 + 1/2 day juice fast last week, and felt incredible again! I also stick to a mostly raw vegan diet with only small amounts of fish on occasion. So I often just replace meals with fresh smoothies or juices these days. I love eating this way, and it has made all the difference!!

It's really life changing to experience the healing powder our bodies have when they aren't being attacked and run down by processed foods, refined sugars, preservatives, caffeine, and drugs!

I personally don't eat eggs. I also have never found fresh plant based juices to be hard on my tummy, and I have LONG SUFFERED from Colitis & IBS. But fresh juices (as long as I avoid tomato, orange, strawberry) have always made me feel incredible.

I'm now a KICK AS (and Kick IBD) success story!! After going low starch Paleo to heal my gut, I can now eat nearly all starches, grains & foods without inflammation, flare-ups, or pain. I used a modified SCD diet approach (minus dairy! plus cacao ♥). Cheers to healing & thriving again! I blog at http://www.forestandfauna.com/about/

Hi Betty,

Great to hear about your journey. Before I started researching water fasting I looked into Juice feasting and considered doing it also. There is a big difference about the two and I encourage you to try a water fast just to experience it ..even as little as 3 days and allow your body to go into ketosis(your body will not go into ketosis on a juice fast!!) Also on a juice fast your digestive system stays active, so I think it would be beneficial for a person with Colitis and IBS like I had to shut down their digestive system for a few days and let it heal!!

I also Enjoy the odd smoothie..a little tip I picked up is to actually chew your smoothie instead of drinking it, I know it sounds weird but it actually gets your digestive system going helping with IBS.

These are just a few tips, it seems like what you're doing is working fine for you so if you keep juice fasting and aren't ready to water fast or don;t feel like it would be beneficial more the power to you.

take care

Evan,

Thanks for posting this it is inspirational. I would love to be able to go away and be 'managed' like that so my gut could heal and just have a rest from thinking about food, but I fear the cost would be prohibitive. I have just fasted for 27 hours to help get me out of a flair and it is working. I would have fasted for longer but we have all the family coming here tomorrow!

I haven't been able to fast before other than once after an illness. Whenever I have tried to do dinner to dinner I haven't got past first base I end up caving in to hunger and eating breakfast. This time I found that if I started after lunch I could go till the following teatime so I now think I could do a longer fast.

You have inspired me to try for a longer one when I have a quiet week.

Do you now include nuts and seeds back in your diet now as they can cause a reaction as with nightshades and can you now take nightshades again or is that a possibility later?

I agree with your points about Carol Sinclairs book I started with her book and I was amazed to read that she drank cola etc. However it is a good starting point if you are coming from a standard diet as anything else just looks to restrictive and unobtainable.

Stay well x
