Don't know about autoimmune, but diabetes / prediabetes / metabolic syndrome will definitely do it!
Exercise is very helpful. Diet is ultra-important. So is keeping the weight down.
I'm good on the first two fronts, could be better with the exercise, in the winter. But the weight, well, it creeps up and is near impossible to get back down.
However, my blood tests were awful a few months ago for both the lipids and the liver enzymes, so my GP and I decided for me to try a statin again.
Simstatin a few years back was way too strong at least at the "normal" dose the doctor had me on; terrible edema and nausea.
So, this time, the new GP put me on the mildest statin (pravastatin) at the lowest dose, just every other day, for the last 6 weeks. No side effects! Just got my blood test results back and the LDLs, triglycerides, and ALT all much much better!
I can keep my triglycerides low with a very low carb (low sugar, low starch) diet, but the LDLs were getting very bad, as was the ALT.
On my way to much better.
I highly recommend the Pravastatin!
I also do the fish oil. should be taking 3000 mg a day but only get about 1500 mg in me daily since the pills are so huge. It is helpful for not only the lipids, but my blood sugar as well.
I also take CoQ. I think that's very important if taking any statin. as the statin blocks an enzyme that is needed for not only cholesterol synthesis but CoQ synthesis too. Its an early step in the metabolism of both, before the pathways branch. But taking CoQ helps prevent the potentially serious muscle problems that can occur on statins. But even on the Simstatin, with the edema and nausea, I had no muscle problems, maybe cause I was on CoQ.

Spondyloarthropathy, HLAB27 negative Humira (still methylprednisone for flares, just not as often. Aleve if needed, rarely.) LDN/zanaflex/flector patches over SI/ice vits C, D. probiotics. hyaluronic acid. CoQ, Mg, Ca, K. chiro walk, bike no dairy (casein sensitivity), limited eggs, limited yeast (bread)
My next "thing" is a trip to the dietician on the 18th. That should help a lot. I tend to just eat whatever is in front of me, so I'm guessing she'll tell me to chew my food - which is not my favorite thing.
Then I'm also going back to swimming every day, because that's the only thing that gives me a cardio workout. Hopefully I'll be able to build up to an hour of laps this year instead of my usual 30 minutes.
This morning? COFFEE!
