If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

I have had normal AS pain for many years. This weekend I have had the worse pain in my hip and leg I have ever had. I can barley walk on it at all. Is it normal to go to this extreem in pain. My leg just does not want to hold my weight, and I cannot force it to either.

Dear Kirk: It can happen to any of us eventually. And yes, you can't even walk through the pain due to what your nerves do and you should not try and force it as I did because it caused severe damage and bleeding from the joint capsule. Later, the NSAIDs got me ambulating again, but ruined my intestinal tract. Short-term, drugs have their place, but please check out the Medical Center section of kickas, esp AS Dietary Primer and then join us on the NSD forum. Hope that you start feeling better soon, John

If it is a very sudden and also sharp pain, you may be pinching or compressing a nerve somewhere in the lower back. Try applying some heat to the area and see if that helps a bit.
Maybe also try probing the area gently with your fingers to see if you can locate a very sensitive spot.
Hope you get some relief soon.

HI Kirk Don't think we have met before?....so hello and welcome ....and as far as your pain goes..I have had that happen to me...about 6 months ago....was aweful..hurt so bad I could do absolutely nothing...as well as scare me to death because I was starting to wonder if that is how I would always feel.....but...it did go away....and I have not had it since.... Is this the first time you have had this happen?....I know many people here have had the hip/leg pain and I'm sure many others will reply...I did take some anti anflammatories and it did knock it out after about a week... hope you feel better soon! Hi Kirk, I can relate to what you are going through! I have had this same problem off and on for almost a year now. When it comes on that strong I need help to get me out of my bed. Everyday tasks become an ordeal, and be careful if you have to sneeze or cough! This type of pain is the worst to me and is very hard to get rid of. Seems you just have to wait this one out. These are the days I swear that I am going to start using a cane. Then as suddenly as it came on, it will disappear, or sometines shift to the other hip. My Doc's have suggested that this may be caused by slipped or bulging discs in my lower back. I thought it was SI joint pain related to the AS but have never really been given a solid answer. Well, sorry to hear it is so severe. Hope it runs it's course and that you become mobile again as soon as possible. Take care.
Kelly

How long have you had AS? I am afraid to say it can be a normal progression. Sometimes it's a FLARE... and will pass with time (and possibly medication or dietary changes). Other times.. it's just that way and it does not pass. Are you under the care of a rheumatologist? ******** Kristin TODAY IS NOT A DRESS REHEARSAL!!

Kirk, I can defintely identify with you. It hasn't happened in a while, but I've been to the point where I couldn't walk. I have actually had to crawl to get where I wanted to go. Not sure if that's a help, but at least I know what your'e going through. Hope it gets easier. Are you seeing a Rheumy and if so, what is he/she doing for you?

Hi, Kirk, I don't think I welcomed you to KickAS. I have a brother named Kirk, very nice name. I think it is a normal progression of AS. NSAID's can knock back the inflamation and the pain. Hot baths, gentle stretches, hot grain bags/heating pads; they all seem to help some. I know we're supposed to exercise, but when it gets like this, too much exercise can definately make it worse. I ended up in a wheelchair for a few months over this same kind of flare. It comes, and then it will go, or move to the other hip. Possibly bursitis?? Hugs, Cindy

I had the same type god awful pains for about the first fifteen years of AS. Sometimes the pain was so bad I couldn't walk or even turn over in bed. After your spine fuses the pain lets up enough for you to not wish for death. I think people who don't fuse have it even worse. I'm 53 and my spine, ribs and SI joints are fused and now I'm starting to get the same pains in my shoulders and hips. I'm going to the Rumey on April the 1st for information about getting on Embrel or Remicade maybe even Arava. I have concerns about these new drugs doing more harm than good in the long run but I also have concers about my hips and shoulders ending up fused. I wish you well and believe me I know what you are going through. This AS really sucks.
