With everything that's happened in my family since last August, my muse has been AWOL. I've had no desire to audition for anything, or submit proposals to direct, and my scripts have been in storage due to the reno, so even if I'd felt moved to audition for something trying to work up a monologue, well, it all was just too much. Thankfully, I've had my dance class every week to keep my creative juices flowing, because my piano has been dust covered (again due to the reno) and I've been afraid to open it, just in case the poor thing choked.

Anyway, my local theatre company sent out its annual call for directors for next year's season at the beginning of the month. One of those plays caught my eye (enough so that I actually went to our storage space because I know I own a copy of this show - couldn't find it in any of the bins), so I photocopied the theatre's script, researched my little AS off and presented my proposal to the Committee last Sunday. Received a phone call shortly before I left for lunch.

I GOT IT!!!

Research and team building start now, but rehearsals start in September, with Auditions in August, for the play "Laura" by Vera Caspary & George Sklar. I have a lighting designer in mind, who's extremely good and practically reads my mind, so I know she'll give me what I want. I'm pretty sure I know who I want for costume design (although she could also very easily do my set design). My sweetie will probably do my sound design for me (he does all my shows now) and I will be doing the music for the show. Props will be a bit of a nightmare (how many walking stick guns have you seen?) between food, and records (must be 78s one of which gets broken during every performance - it's part of the script) and 18th century Chinese vases weighted down with buckshot that get broken during every night of the show (honestly, playrights really should take budget into account when they put stuff like that into the lines of the show, which means you can't get around them).

It's based on the 1944 movie of the same name (which was based on a book by Vera Caspary) starring Gene Teirney, Dana Andrews, Clifton Webb and Vincent Price. "Laura" is considered one of the earliest film noir movies, so I'm incorporating that into my design (need to learn about German Expressionism now). I have a TON OF RESEARCH to do before August!!

It feels good to be excited like this.

Warm hugs,

Kat

Congratulations Kat, that's brilliant news!!! Sounds like you'll have your hands full for quite some time... but also that you'll love every second of it!

It would be so nice to be able to bottle some of that excitement and store it for later... for now, enjoy every second!

Wow Kat!
That does sound exciting!
I should have been able to tell from your fabulous photo that you are a theatrical girl!
It's quite infectious hearing you chat about all the details - but very daunting - I'm very much in awe of your talent!
Look forward to hearing your rave reviews in the near future!
Good luck! (I know you are not supposed to say that in theatrical circles but I am not in a million years going to say the traditional "br**k a leg" to a fellow AS sufferer. See, I can't even type the words - I have to leave it looking like an expletive!!!
Huge congratulations to you, Kat! I'm very happy for you.

That's great it is good to hear you so excited. I love the theater, I go when ever I can. I guess I caught the bug in High School. I took every drama and acting class our small school had, Even played the lead in our school musical my senior year.
Go get em Kat!

That is wonderful. I feel it is important to go outside of our sick lives and stretch our imaginations. We all need something to get our creative juices flowing. Your enthusiasm is coming through my computer now. I hope it is contagious.

That's great, Kat. I'm very excited for you. I directed community theatre for about 15 years before giving it up for a while. At some point, I'll probably be driven back to it. I know that feeling at the beginning when you're starting to develop your plans - so exciting. Please post updates for us - it might reinspire me to get involved again sooner than I would have.
