Hi Alan,

First thing I thought of when I read title is "break a leg". Not sure where that expression came from... but if this expression becomes popular we know Alan started it all off.

Well, it depends on what you believe, really. There are many different versions of where "break a leg" originated. Could be that it comes from the time of King James 1, when the fabled throwing of rotten veggies at a bad performance was countered by throwing coins at a good one. When that happens, the actors would break the line of their legs by bending down to pick them up.

Most actors think of it at tempting fate to wish someone good luck, so we wish bad luck instead (rather like dancers saying "Merde" to each other before a performance - literally wishing each other to step in "[censored]" during the performance). This is carried through several languages (Roman, German, Yiddish). The Greeks used to stomp their feet on the ground if they liked a performance, sometimes breaking their leg in the stomping. Elizabethans used to pound their chairs on the ground if they liked a performance, sometimes breaking the legs of the chairs.

Or, it could be because the rods used to open and close the curtains on a stage were called 'legs'. If a performance was particularly good and there were many bows, the curtains would be raised and lowered multiple times, and sometimes the legs would break.

Did I do good, Kev? grin

warm hugs,

Kat
