I am so very upset, I haven't stopped crying since I got the email message early this afternoon. They say I am not disabled enough - that I don't need dog to turn on lights - I don't need dog to open doors - or pick things off floor. They say I should approach someone about a hearing ear dog. So I am back to square one. I can't get hearing ear dog - because I am not profoundly deaf. But will put application into Lions Club here - see if there is a chance. Not going to get my hopes up - can't keep getting knocked down like this. This is so crazy.  hugs Gerri

I am so sorry to hear this Gerri, I know you have been waiting and hoping for such a long time. What a terrible disappointment. Good luck in your application for a hearing dog. My thoughts are with you.

Hi Carol,
I have been trying to get a service dog for over 2 years now. My family doctor at the time would not fill out the papers for a hearing service dog, because I am not profoundly deaf. I approached the Hearing Society here, they said they could not help me. With severe Auditory Processing Disorder, I don't understand what I hear - I am falling through the cracks. My hearing is within the low normal.
If this application goes no where - I will look into getting another miniature dachshund. I don't care if they raise my rent here - I need a puppy to help me understand what I hear, and deal with firealarm without having a panic attack each time it goes off. I don't smell smoke and cannot function when there is a fire alarm.

One more try - at the Lion's Club - if it doesn't work then I am going to get myself a miniature dachshund and litter train it.

That is disappointing. Have you given thought to training your own service/therapy dog with some of the tasks you need the most assistance with? I'm sure it requires time & commitment but it could also be fun. There are resources on the net for reading up on the possibilities, and maybe a local trainer would be willing to assist you? I don't think a miniature dachshund will be able to reach the light switch...you might need something a tad bigger  Best wishes!

Gerri, this is disappointing. I am still on the wait list supposedly. I tried to back out because of my age and not many dogs available and thinking someone might need it worse than me but they insisted they leave me on the list. I am just waiting until they contact me again. They invited us to a Christmas Dinner so I guess they haven't completely forgotten us. :o)

Gerri - why don't you contact your local TV station, newspaper etc, or have someone do it for you. And fill them in on your plight. Maybe you could get some attention that way and some help with this.

That's terrible news! What else can be done about this? I was planning on researching this and making a charitable contribution to them this year, I've given to the search dog organization in the past, thought this would be a better choice But glad you are thinking about doing it on your own anyway, even if it won't be a highly-trained dog that would assist you with your daily activities Having a little buddy with you will probably help in many other ways too
