Hi everyone,

A recent post of mine talking about how delicious mashed cauliflower is gave me a hankering for some tonight

So I bought a nice fresh one, steamed it and then tested it.... BLACK, BLACK, BLACK... so black it was nearly blue!! And yet last week I bought a cauli from the exact same place, cooked and tested it... not a trace of starch.

So please please please, I cannot stress it enough..... if you're going to eat cauliflower on the NSD you really MUST test it each and every time even if buying it from the same place.

Hi Chelsea,

I seem to have a little less sensitivity them some here, but I have never been able to eat cauliflower.

Years ago we noticed that Calif. nearly killed my joints, sometimes. Yet, at times it has had no affect.
Best wishes for you.

Hey Tim,

Yeah, I think maybe for newbies to the diet it may be best not to eat it at all at first. Once they get their symptoms under control after a few months then maybe experiment with it. Or maybe better to leave it out altogether....not worth the risk.

I regret mentioning the mashed cauliflower now.... hope nobody gets hurt!

Just goes to show you cant necessarily trust the "starch content of foods" sticky post at the top of this forum as it shows cooked Cauli as being 0.2% starch ...clearly this is not the case. I think that list is great for most things and for giving a general indication of what not to eat but when it comes to vegetables I find it to be incorrect for many.

I checked just because and the cauliflower was fine both times. I appreciate the warning though.

Hey Dan,

Yup watermelon has always tested postive for starch for me too. It's a shame as it's so yummy.

It's my DD's birthday today - she's 12 y.o.! In our house, when it's your BD, you are "Queen for the Day" and get to choose the dinner menu, and what sort of cake you're going to have...

I think I have shot myself in the foot by always providing delicious home-made whole-food meals... surely most kids her age would say - "let's go to KFC/Macca's/Insert-fast-food-restaurant-name-here", but what does she want???

Roasted pumpkin, carrot, tomato and coriander soup - with whole chickpeas in it please, mum - and sourdough rye bread rolls!!!

Needless to say, that's what she's getting, but not me - I made some cauliflower and bacon soup and Thank Goodness - the cauli tested negative. Yay! Jeanne posted this recipe here a while ago and it's great with the sweet winter caulis.

I just got the bread out of the oven and it looks and smells wonderful....<sniff, boo hoo>

Ella is dairy-free, so we had a chocolate raspberry pudding cake for afternoon tea - a first time experiment, but it worked well. The best part was that it was DF *and* starch-free! (If you don't count chocolate - but we consider that one of the 5 main food groups in this house - too bad it comes from a bean!) I made the ganache with coconut milk and it worked fine. I will post the recipe in the recipe forum in the next day or so...
