If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

DH had this really bad for most of his adult life. He could not take any of the serious meds because he is a pilot. So we spoke to a natural doc. He told him to exercise his legs as in riding a bike and to take calcium drink more milk or take in pill form. He started cycling and drinks fat free lactose free milk during the day and takes calcium pills 1 hour before bed time. It has changed his life he now sleeps well . The theory is to fatigue the legs so when you sleep they are too busy recuperating and dont have energy to kick.If you can get a stationary bike and ride while watching TV.

Tried that too, and got worse - actually I always have exercised during the day and I've been taking calcium for years now (lots of it, good kinds). I so wish that would have "cured" me. But I'm happy to hear it worked for your hubby! I've found that hot baths and massage help a little bit.
After talking with others, it's starting to sound like it's not RLS after all. Sounds more like peripheral neuropathy, but I won't get in to see a specialist for testing for months at the earliest. Laa la laaaa... around and around we go. lol Great fun.

Is peripheral neuropathy related to AS?

Yesterday I was watching Oprah and Dr Oz was on. Guess what he was talking about? RLS!
He says it is a lack of Calcium and Magnesium. Maybe you could do trial and error. Start off slowly and then increase. Also Trudi said it could be Magnesium and Potasium.
Well, he's partly right about the Ca and Mg. Tried that already. Actually I was already taking all that (good kinds, powder/liquid form) when the RLS started. And my bloodwork shows all my electrolytes are good too.
I was just reading a study of people who couldn't get rid of their RLS. When they died, they did autopsies and discovered the thing they all had in common, was a decrease of iron in their brain and spinal cord cells. Blood levels were just fine, but for some reason, the central nervous system cells "forgot" how to utilize iron. Kind of interesting.
see if your naturopath doc knows anything about NAET ... www.naet.com (corrected link)
my daughters had joint & leg pain and thru kinesiology (sp?) found they were deficient in Mg & Calcium and we spent a LOT of $$ on supplements. Found out thru NAET that their body was not absorbing any of it. A couple sessions and they were able to get their bodies to reverse the problem and now they absorb what they need. Their pains are gone too.

I'm not sure if there's a correlation with AS or not, but I know of more than a few here with peripheral neuropathy. Wouldn't surprise me if there's an autoimmune component to it either.

Thanks Trudi. Could you double check that link? I get "Nordic Association of Electricity Traders" that comes up, and I'm guessing that's not quite right?
How does NAET work exactly? As long as it's not some sort of some sort of weird therapy, I'm in!

Megan, Yes, it is awful! Sometimes it is all I can do to listen to someone with just ailment! But I am still confident that I can stay on a diet that will stop my pain. But my dear friend, just be glad that you do not have to move my "short thick legs!" They mistook the rls, the other evening for a earth quake!!!!!

Thanks for the giggle, Lon. An earthquake.... well, as humorous as you make it out to be, I sure hope that they find a good treatment for RLS soon. The diet has helped me tremendously, also, and if I knew of a diet to help RLS (or whatever this may be), I would be on it in a heartbeat. I think vitamin E is helping though...

corrected the link to www.naet.com ! LOL sorry! It is basically therapy of kineseiology with accupuncture or reflexology, nothing more.. and avoidance of the 'allergen' for 24 hours.
In a nutshell: your body is one 'radio frequency', the things we come into contact with have their own signal. If our body recognizes it, no worries because then it knows what to do with it. If your body is not understandint the frequency, it deals with it as an unknown danger (allergy) and this is what creates problems. Usually our body stuffs it somewhere (in our fat, or weakest organ systems, etc).
So if our body recognizes minerals as 'danger' then it puts up a block to protect itself and refuses to absorb those minerals, causing deficiency and a lot of health problems. My daughter was so deficient in minerals that she was showing bone loss from a lot of prednisone & other chemo drugs. nothing was being absorbed because her body was rejecting it all. within a week after the allergy elimination, she was improving her mineral count!
One friend had gone YEARS without a good night's sleep found out her body was 'allergic' to serotonin. Every time her body produced serotonin, her body said 'nope! not gonna go there.. wake up!' After clearning this problem, she can now sleep restfully!
My body stuffed allergies into my joints/ligaments & tendons, which is my weak areas. Found out I'm sensitive to nearly every food, mold, fungus, cold, pressure changes, chemicals, plastics, etc.... crazy! But as I get each thing cleared, I do feel better, esp mentally!
Another example is sensitivities to our medications. my 8 yo was in need of growth hormone (something we knew) but her script was weakening her blood (which probably meant cancer in the future which can be a side effect). It took awhile to clear this, but we finally did so know I know her meds are not hurting her.
It is quite a fascinating therapy and has helped our family quite a bit. It is something I am for sure going to study & practice when I finally become a naturopath!

Hi Megan, I've followed your RLS thread because I too suffer with this and it is enough to literally drive us nuts. I am most interested to read everyones suggestions too. My good friend who comes from India, told me of a RLS remedy her mother used to use. Very simply, it was massaging the legs with a combination of oil and sand/salt. Sounds like rubbing the legs with sandpaper, but I think the theory behind this was to overstimulate the nerve endings to counteract the nerve irritability. When you look at this in conjunction with peripheral neuropathy, it kind of makes some sense. I guess if nothing else, nothing lost/nothing gained from giving it a try. Only drawback might be losing a few surface skin cells but you will have terribly smooth legs! I hope you do find some serious relief soon.
