Hi Karen:

I keep trying to think of a way that you might turn these events to your advantage.

One idea, if you know you are going to move in a year, might be to do what a friend of mine did when he retired, but of course, this only works if you know where you are moving to.

What he did was bought the house he was going to, well before he retired, then rented it to another couple, which gave him the rental income for that period before they moved. He also got the new house at a cheaper price than he would have if he had waited, and also he was able to have more time to look for the new house, in a less stressful situation than he would if he waited, and had to deal with leaving one house and getting another.

Wonder if that might work for you?

Especially in this current economic climate, with houses at a 30 year low or whatever they are right now. Prices are pretty much guaranteed (well, as much as a guarantee that you can ever get) to go up from here, and banks are certainly in a bad way, so would be more likely to give you a lower interest rate-

Also occurs to me with your husband still employed at the University, that would likely make him a better candidate as a lower-risk prospective buyer, and things could be different a year from now, when his job ends

Just a thought!

Hoping it will work out for you!!

Thanks for the thought, Dow, and I wish it would work for us. The problem is, we've never gotten to choose where we wanted to live. It works like this: The chance of any particular college or university having an opening in physics is fairly small. A lot of places can go years without having an opening. If a university decided to hire a physicist, they would be looking for someone with a particular specialty. If it wasn't David's area of expertise, he wouldn't be eligible. Unversities are normally required by accreditation rules to do a national search when they want to fill a position. That means they adverstise all over the country and get about 100 resumes for one opening. About half of those 100 resumes will be individuals who are clearly not qualified for the position, but that still leaves 50 eager, willing and qualified candidates for one position.

It's a crapshoot. You send out a ton of resumes and if you are lucky you end up with a job, but it's doubtful you would end up in a particular city that you were interested in.

Phooey. Will keep thinking on it.

My friend Nigel in England also teaches physics and is out of work, but that could have something to do with him rather than the state of affairs over there! He gets by these days by tutoring, along with the English dole, if that is the proper term

Hi Dow,

That's the proper term (and my brother is called Nigel).

I wonder if this might be inspirational?
(Or not relevant that is also possible!)

This is the story of an ad agency executive who at age 60 lost his job of 26 years, didn't know what to do, and one morning goes to Starbucks, and they happened to be having a hiring day, and he figures, why not, fills out an application and then starts out on the bottom rung, working his way up to a barista, cleaning toilets etc. He slowly learns to enjoy it, even thought it is certainly different from his earlier life

Then he writes a book about his experience, it becomes a NY Times Bestseller, and now it is going to be a movie, starring Tom Hanks!!

Thanks Wendy, I am starting to feel so worldly, learning so much, while sitting on the floor leaning against my couch all day, I mean all night

I know what you mean. I grieved so many losses when I had to go on disability over a weekend. It is truly a grief process and you just have to let yourself go through it step by step.

I think of you often.
Hugs.
