Hi Michelle:

At the SXSW festival in Austin tonight, the winner of the documentary film festival was a movie called "MINE" about the bond between animals and people against the backdrop of Katrina:

I'm a bit disappointed, because we did the sound for another film named "Garbage Dreams" that was in direct competition with it, although still proud that it was among eight films of of 700 that were entered. But still nice that the winning film was such an important subject!

Dow - what a film. Beautifully composed and edited. Good background music. Really got the message of heartache across - animals and humans. Hope its aired worldwide.

But you came 8th, well done man. Concratulations. 8th out of 700 - that has to be more than good Any chance of seeing your 'Garbage Dreams' like the winning one you posted?

Wow...powerful stuff Dow, it was definitely different, the animals were reaching out to us for help but I gotta tell you, not only did I take all of my pets out but every animal I saw loose on the way out, I stopped and picked up too(I was hauling a 32' cargo trailer equipped with animal crates behind my truck) I cannot fathom leaving behind my pets.... But some of these people were not in a position to take their pets out, maybe they didn't have a car or were riding with friends or if you have 2 parents and 4 kids, not much room for anything else in the car...they also weren't allowed to bring pets to the shelters, a lot of people chose to stay home because their pets couldn't go with them and they died right there with their pets...

all i know is that i would be devastated if anything happened to mookie, our bird. they are family. i can understand that the new family fell in love with the dog, but i was a little surprised that they didn't return the dog to his first owner. but that's just me.

Thanks, Molly! Yes, it is nice to have gotten that far! You can see the "Garbage Dreams" trailer here: (and some of the upcoming screenings, don't see any in the near future in Brittany, France though.. )

Wow, Michelle, I'm sure you have a lot of stories to tell about the animal rescue during that time.

It even affected us up here, in NY state. All four of our Eskies came from the same rescuer, and when Katrina happened, she rescued as many as she could. Too many, in fact. She was overflowing with dogs at her house, and she also had to leave some of them at the dog grooming store that she ran, while trying to find adopters. Unfortunately, (this all happened the second week after Katrina hit) passer-bys looked into the window at the store, and saw numerous puppies running around freely, called the humane society, and had her store shut down! It WAS in fact unsafe (some of the puppies died of parvo) and no one doubts that the people calling had the right intentions, but you sure wish they could have understood, that everyone was doing the best they could during that crazy time!

Maybe Sue should avoid the upcoming "30 Rock" episode in which Kenneth the Page's parrot meets an untimely demise!

(Don't worry, it was not a real bird, just a fake one, and he does end up with even more birds than he started with!!)
