I can't seem to find that thread either, but I remember posting my favorite, life-saving shoes:
Montrail flip flops for bad feet

They have a softer sort of sole to them, like crocs, but the great part of these, is you actually stick them in the oven and then mold them to your feet for a minute, so they fit perfectly and there aren't any pressure points. And when you hold up your arches, they mold great arch supports (better than my $300 orthotics).

I have about 4 pairs of these, and cannot live without them! Even if they aren't as soft as a bag of marshmallows. ha!

i figured with all the "helpful" suggestions i was giving,
i owed it to you to do something that was actually helpful,
so i found that thread about what to wear which has some good shoe suggestions.
i'm glad i found it as i should look at it too. its time for me to try again.

I know I have heard good and bad on these, but my Chung shis really make my feet "not hurt". I said that because I have never felt better while wearing them, but when I take them off I always notice gravity again. They helped my plantar fasciitis all but disappear and my knees and sacrum a lot. My only issue with them is they are synthetic leather which exacerbates my eczema so "socks and sandals so sexy!". I agree with what Sue says about not only treating the symptoms. I recently tried those chairs that contain a yoga ball for desk work. It was awesome for lumbar tucking, but my cervical issues felt worse (so maybe a much higher desk, and therefore a bib, and that's why I don't have one of those...). {I think I sank down into the crocs too much, I always got the "beds too soft" syndrome with them} Hi Megan, I bought the Chef's Gel mat for my kitchen sink and now it's an island I stay on. I should have thought of the puzzle mats!

Birkenstocks. I swear by them ... er ... when it's warm enough to wear them.

Hugs,

how do you like your chef's gel mat? i've been eyeing them, almost bought one, but then got busy and never acted on it, but have thought they might be good. what do you think?

you mentioned the ball chair. i similar concept but with even more movement is the swopper chair. its a stool on a spring that sways in all directions. $600 but has been worth every penny. the one i have is at work so my grant paid for it rather than me. i like it so much, i am going to buy one for home with my own money. not sure i would have paid $600 out of my own pocket first as pretty much all other chairs don't work. the only other way i can sit is on a small flat chair that i can tip forward and rock on the front 2 legs. it was that habit of sitting that made me realize that something designed to have that sort of motion just might work for me, and it does.

Has anyone tried custom fit soles? Like making a mould of your feet and creating soles from it? My doctor have told me that this might be helpful, although my feet are not pronating in any special way...

if you mean orthodics, yes, my podiatrist made the mold of my feet for my custom orthodics and i shelled out about $300 in excitement........

but i can't wear them, they kill my feet more than just about anything,
and this really baffles me, and my podiatrist.

i tried adjusting to them very slowly, like only wearing them for a few minutes sitting, supposed to work up to an hour sitting, then start a few minutes standing / walking and to build up to an hour....but never got very far with the sitting.

but others swear by the custom orthodics, so i don't know why i can't seem to do it.

I bought a type of soles that I heated in the oven for a few minutes, put them in my shoes imediately and then put my shoes on. Part from the fact that they seemed to fall a part a bit in the baking it worked and they formed at least a bit after my feet. Haven't had any effect on my plantar falicis (100% misspelt for sure) but are comfortable though...
