Hi there,
I was wondering if it is ok to eat a lot of products made with ground almonds - is it possible to overdo it? Has anyone had any problems with this? I make the choc macaroons from the recipe forum, and have just made the delicious, fabulous almond bread recipe as well. I also add ground almonds to smoothies and use it mixed with grated cheese as a crumb topping for grilled fish. In fact, even tho I'm still a newbie to the NSD I can find all sorts of ways to use it and even tho I've never eaten whole almonds as I don't like them, I'm starting to be concerned that I'm eating too much of it, but it's sooo useful. Need I be concerned?
Cheers, Jo.

Hi Jo - Are the almonds blanched first. Its the skins that are starchy and if I eat too many with skin, I will have an AS flare, my sacrum will become inflamed.

The other issue that goes for all nuts, is mold, and will feed fungus, or Candida, the other chronic illness that causes many of us problems, due to our dysfunctional immune system. I would get the nuts as fresh as possible, perhaps fresh picked at the farm, and freeze them. I have heard that by time nuts reach the markets shelves, they are already rancid. My symptoms for Candida are pain and stiffness in my neck, upper, back and shoulders. Joint pain in feet and muscle cramps/pain in calves. Skin rashes. Ear Aches. Vaginas yeast. Chronic fatigue. Brain fog. Heal cracking. Athletes foot.

So, since we all experience this disease a little differently, how are your pain levels? I am only able to remain pain free when I follow a very strict diet of no starch and no sugar, dairy, alcohol, nuts, etc. Some people can have a more varied diet then that, so you have to go by how you are feeling.

Are you keeping a food journal. This really helped me for 2 years, and now I know exactly what I can and cannot consume. It was a lot of trial and error and pain, but it was worth the effort.

how have you been feeling? Have you been feeling pain or bloating, or feeling well? Sometimes I get into a habit of eating too many almond flour baked goods, and feel better when I eat those in moderation, and keep to a diet that is rich in protein, vegetables and fruit. But I love using the almond flour and think it is great! Would you share your recipes?

Hi Jan,
I am starting to feel better now after a few hiccups at the beginning (I'm up to the 2 week mark now!) The bloating is much much less than it was, and my body seems to be starting to adjust to the new diet now, which is really great! Oh, and the recipes I use are from the recipe forum - chocolate macaroons, and easy almond bread. I can have toast! Even toasted sandwiches! Try it, it's great! Just remember the loaves are very tiny - the loaf tin size is crucial cos they're cooked in the microwave - but I still get about 6 slices to a loaf, cut lengthwise, so that's cool. I also just mix in grated cheese to the ground almonds and a bit of parsley and a squirt of lemon juice and just pat down on top of a fish fillet, then grill. Easy peasy, and its almost like crumbed fish!
Cheers, Jo.

Hi there, I buy the ground almonds either in small 70gm packets, or sometimes from the bulk bins at the supermarket. I'm pretty sure they're blanched - there's no brown bits - so no skins I guess.
I am indeed keeping a food journal - everything gets written down along with how I'm feeling.
IBS is my most severe symptom, and I feel I may have just turned the corner - bloating much better, and I'm starting to feel positive that I may get this demon under control, it's ruled my life for far too long. I am also taking Nilstat tabs for candida at the moment as the dr thinks this may be an issue, although I wasn't aware I had it!
All the best,
Jo

Several members here have posted in past they have to eat almonds in moderation. I am one as well that if I eat too many almonds I can feel a little stiffness.

I can also attest to the mold issue that Jeanne brings up.
