Hey Jeff--something I've noticed since going NSD, there are certain foods that are starch-free that bother my stomach, and then of course there are the starch-full foods that bother my inflammation/iritis. Some things affect me quite guickly those things being the items that bother my stomach. However, the starch-full things which bother my inflammation USUALLY show an affect within 12 hours BUT they usually do not bother my stomach. So just because your stomach isn't bothered by a food item the item may still be affecting your inflammation.

I think Wind-Rider is definitely onto something re hidden starches in your diet. There are so many starches that are put into the foods we eat, especially at restaurants! Do you have iodine? that is the easiest way to test foods for starch. If the drop of iodine turns dark or black stay away from the food, no matter what the ingredients are supposed to be. For example, I made a curry with safe veggies and chicken, I tested everything before I put it in the crock pot, when it finished cooking, I checked it again, and it turned black! Then I remembered Kiwi telling us that some veggies and food items will release their starch with cooking...so, no curry for me, but my husband loved it!!!

Keep at it, it's the best thing we got!! When I started this reply I did have a point to make, I'm sure of it, I just don't know where it went!

Cheers,
Rita

Thanks Rita,
I was just trusting my gut for everything but I'll start paying more attention to my pain in my neck, back and hip to see if a food flares it up. How do you react to rice? It doesn't seem to give me any pain at all in my stomach but I'm going to try to pay more attention to my pain in my neck, back and hip and see if it gets flared up. I did notice this morning when I cut out the egg yolks from my eggs (and just ate the whites) that my stomach felt much better (no pain in stomach) whereas when I had the yolks in my eggs it would bother my stomach and send me to the bathroom. This is definitely a major discovery for me as I was eatting quite a few eggs and getting stomach pain sometimes and couldn't pinpoint what it was coming from. Then I read some people have problems with egg yolks. I think that was you Rita. If so thank you! If not thank you to whoever posted that!

That's cool Shelli. Send me a message sometime if your going to be in town visiting your family in Westminster and we'll meet up and go have some plain chicken wings (no sauce). Buffalo Wild Wings has some good ones and you can get them plain with no sauce (although they are pretty small) so usually I get a lot of them.

Hey Jeff. Yup, that was me with the egg yolks, your welcome! funny isn't it that the yolk could bother our tums? maybe it is the cholesterol? I think most of the cholesterol is in the egg yolk and not the white, hmmmmmm.....I haven't tried any rice yet, I'm scared I will react to it the same as I reacted to spaghetti [sauce & pasta, about 1/4 - 1/2 cups worth]. The spaghetti didn't bother my stomach at all, I love spaghetti, but my iritis came back with a vengeance the next morning!!! so I am not ready to try any starches yet. I do feel twinges in my left knee, hips, back, neck, occasionally if I have eaten a little too much of something, usually whipped cream and hot chocolate [and I'm not sure if it is the hot chocolate mix or the whipped cream], chocolate bar [Cadbury/Hersheys]. And sometimes I am not able to pinpoint what it was that I had that bothers the knee etc. but I'm working on it...still a work in progress!

I'm glad you figured out about the eggs, especially since eggs are pretty important to our diet. I am glad that I can eat the whites, I usually scramble them and include one whole egg, with 3 whites, and add lots of veggies, tomato, green onion [sometimes], spinach, broccoli, ham, whatever I can find! I don't like to eat much beef or pork so I stick pretty much to chicken.

Keep up the updates!

Cheers,
Rita

Phil,

Approximately 1 in 7 adults are lactose intolerant, and most probably do not realise it. If you are one of this sizeable minority, eliminating starch may not be enough because the undigested lactose will also feed the klebsiella. So many when starting the diet avoid dairy to begin with and if they improve reintroduce it and see what happens. Both yogurt and milk contain lactose, no difference there, but if you are not intolerant to it yogurt with 'friendly' bacteria (probiotics) is often used to crowd out the klebs.

Dear Jeff

It was me who posted this things about lean meat being deadly. Well, I haven't tried myself, but according to people like Sally Fallon and others I trust, in the old days when people in the bush were forced to survive on rabbit hunting only, they would get seriously ill after one week eating rabbit meat only since this is really lowfat.
They called this symtom "rabbit starvation" since, independent of how much meat they ate, they continued loosing weight and feeling hungry, and in the end continuing this way would be fatal. Fat is vital and is utterly misunderstood these days. When my eyes were opened for this I discovered a huge fat hunger in myself. I guess we are all different, but at least I can tell you I am 99% free from AS and Crohn, doing 100% NSD with meat, fat, dairy and some veggies and fruit since a couple of months ago.

There are good fats=animal ones, and bad fats=vegetable ones=cancerous ones...

Good luck my friend
Andreas

Turns out after I let my gut heal for a day that rice did bother my stomach it just takes a couple hours before it bothers me (maybe because it takes longer to digest). Oh well, I'm going to try just getting lettuce, chicken and guacamole from Chipotle and see if that bothers me.

I have an interesting question. Have you ever tried adding organic real vanilla to the plain soymilk?

Sure, I add vanilla to lots of things! Just avoid the "pure" powdered vanilla because they will use starch grain as a filler in it. I really screwed up once and bought a jar of this really expensive powdered, finest madascasgar pure powdered vanilla...which had a form of barley malt in it when I re read the label. Ditto those commercial "coffee creamer" type of items... flavored creamers in coffee shops...
who knows what is really in that crap. But if you use bottled liquid pure vanilla you might be okay. You can always stick a vanilla bean in vodka and make your own...then you KNOW what is really in it.

This is why I like the health food stores sometimes...or the natural foods aisle at this one local chain we have here in California (Raley's) because they do have a small gluten free section and you can find condiment and seasoning items specifically made and marketed to not have at least the wheat, rye, and barley in it. But you have to be careful with the label reading there also.

One of the things I like to use is wheat free tamari soy sauce, for example. You can make really good, easy teriaki sauce with that, you just slog some oil, honey, tamari, and orange juice in a little bowl and stir and you've got a great chicken sauce or salad dressing if you add a tiny bit of apple cider vinegar.

Also, vinegar...you want to use plain apple cider vinegar and not the types that are "apple cider flavored" because they will be distilled grain vinegars with caramel coloring added.

I got a vanilla extract from a health foods store. The ingredients have Glycerin, certified organic vanilla bean extraxtives, water. Is Glycerin ok?
