Yep the lymphs can swell because of infection but also when they are in a fight against an agressor, like AS or autoimmune diseases.
You may have an accompanying illness such as Sjogrens Syndrome. It is not unkown among AS'ers.
That would be the Parotid glands swelling in that case and this disease also flares and remits. Sometimes the lymphs are letting you know your body has an invader ...and that may be your ownself.

Hi,
Have noticed a swollen gland in my neck...lymph.Saw a specialist about an urelated thingo today and mentioned it to him .He said it is swollen and to check with my doc. Itold him I was seeing rheumy next week and could it be related to my neck pain.'.mmmmmm...maybe ' he didnt want to commit an answer because he specialises in something else.I really thought all doctors went to the same school? He asked if I had a sorethroat?I told him,'only the slightest touch"....
Was wondering how you went with yours or if anyone else has had this happen? So I thought I,d bump up this post...

Hi
Thanks for bumping up the post, Jude.
Go to your GP and get it checked out.

From personal experience, I went to the doc,had an ultrasound, they sent a report to the doctor, confirmed what it was and the doctor I went to at the time told me not to worry about it unless it got bigger.
My swollen lymph node is still there, two years or so after it first appeared and I asked the doc about it yesterday since I was there, anyway. It seemed to get bigger recently, and I can feel it on the inside now.
Although I am sure it isn't sinister I don't like the idea of it being there!
It has gotten bigger before but I thought I better go and get it checked out while I was there, just to be on the safe side. He said that because it has been there two years it is not likely to go away.

And according to the doc, there are all sorts of possibilities as to the cause...and not just the bad ones, either . One of his thoughts it was some sort of immune response as my immune system is impaired anyway? I guess that is quite possible and I wouldn't be surprised?
Because I was seeing another GP at that point in time he is going to get the scan results I had done then and call me back when they locate the scan so he can review it and have a look at what to do next.
I have noticed that it has stayed the same size for a couple of years until recently but did swell up when I am sick? It goes back to its normal size after I have recovered...Have you experienced that?

Let me know how you go at the doc- good luck.

Cheers,
Jess

My husband has a few dozen enlarged lymph nodes all over his body. They look weird, like big lumps under the skin on his arms, his legs and his torso. The doctor keeps an eye on them, but says as long as he can move them easily they are not a problem. There is a name for what he has, but I forget what it is.

That's not to say all enlarged lymph nodes are not a problem; they can be a symptom of lymphoma. I hope you can get a solid answer about yours, hopefully one which will relieve you of your worrying.

Also, if that doctor you were seeing was unable to give you a solid answer, I wouldn't worry about that. I'd rather have a doctor say, "I don't know. That's not my area," than give me an uneducated, possibly incorrect answer.

Hi Kath,

I agree with Marnie, with AS our body has to fight inflammation all the time and since AS is an immune disorder it makes since that the lymph nodes would swell up. Since my immune system keeps attacking my lungs every time I go in to my Immunologist the nodes under my neck are big. I also have Fibromyalgia and have noticed them swelling more.

I am going to invest in an ION cleansing machine as soon as I can afford one. If I hadn't see how it works I never would have believed it (my friend has one)

Good luck,

Lisa

Hmm . . . I've had a "permagland" on my neck since I was 4 years old, that was never explained . . . I wonder if it's related to the AS thingie . . .

I did catch Strangles from my horse once (streptolococcus equine, causes lymphnal abcesses that cut off a horse's windpipe, hence the name). It was the funniest thing . . . my GP was a horsewoman, and every time I saw her we'd spend the first few minutes "talking shop," blah blah . . . I'd gone in because I had this lump Down Below that was scary as heck, I was convinced I had cancer or something, and during our little horse-talk session, I told the doc that Tammy had strangles and I'd been out irrigating her lanced abcess twice a day (tons of fun) (she really is amazingly patient with me). We shot the bull a bit more, and then she said "Well, let me see your lovely lump" (my lovely lady lump lol) (that's part of a rap song my friend had on her voicemail for a looooong time . . . a really STUPID rap song, might I add . . .) She checked it out and said "Bridget, you spend so much time with horses, I think you're actually BECOMING one . . . " (this was actually BEFORE I caught West Nile . . .)

She had it checked. It was strep. equine. I've always been a medical mystery . . .

I know that's random, but I just wanted to share my swollen-gland story lol
