Hi Petra!

I use salazopyrin and think it's quite good. I don't hate it as much as I hate my other meds.
It's usually effective on back problems especially (including neck and SI)! I've heard it's not that effective on joint swellings.

It think it took me about 2 months to start working. When I then had a break of it - my inflammation got worse.

They say it's safe to use between the pregnancies and even when pregnant.. I'm not sure if one should trust into that.. it's a powerful drug after all.

My liver is handling it reasonably well but I know people who had to stop taking it because it was too much for their livers.

What drugs you've had before?

Petra,

Dragonslayer has mentioned a few times that the enteric coated versions of this drug are of better use for us, and are to be asked for.

I know that this drug is better for peripheral joints and less for axial, although bilko, I believe, said it was good to him all together.

Best.

My AS has been mainly axial - spine and hips with other joints only a few times during very worst flares - but the enteric coated sulfa was effective in lowering ESR from 50+ down to 20+ when my then doc (Ebringer) stopped them. Though I have my doubts about using the stuff very long term; my brother did until his blood test results started to look worrying and he had to stop taking them. For the last few years they have been monitoring him at a haematology clinic. Anybody taking sulfa should have blood tested regularly.

I think it's called Azulphidine or similar. Ask the doc.

Hi Petra
I've been on Salazopryn EC for over a year now and it has helped tremendously...specially in the middle of the night when the pain was unbearable...I would say 60% better than pre-drug days...takes about 2 -2 1/2 months to work but worth the wait
good luck with it
Jimmy
