If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

Hi Raj My name is Steve, obviously, and I've had both my hips replaced at a very young age. I spent about two years visiting Doc's up and down the east coast. Eventually a physician named Michael Bronson did the replacements of both my hips. I was 22 for the left and 23 for the right. When you speak of bilateral replacement I assume you're referring to both replaced in the same surgical procedure. Why? I asked about that since my left was fused for years at that time and my right was in brutal pain but functioning. If you can do them several months apart it makes more sense. You're going to need to bear weight on something and with both replaced together you're recovery is going to be tough. I was on my feet in days with crutches and two weeks with a cane and quickly in the gym doing intense rehab. After the surgery you can't allow your leg to roll inward or you jeopardize the replacement sleeping is difficult because of the precautions and I can't imagine doing two at once. PM me with questions. I am not telling you not to do both at once. Just questioning why. It seems like it may benefit the Doc more than you. Whatever your choice best wishes and START THE NSD DIET SO you don't lose shoulder and spine like I did and as young or fast as I did. I was a skeptic but not any more. stevec-they also serve who stand and wait

Hi Raj!
Welcome to the group! I have only been a part of this group for a bit less than a few months and they have treated me like I have been part of the group for ages. You will find that these people are angels. They will cheer you up when you are down, they will answer any questions even if they are kind of silly, and give you so much support.
I personally don't have a lot of problems with my hips mostly it is in my spine and my chest and now my neck. I do have a friend of mine who's Mom just had both of her hips replaced. She doesn't have AS but had hip problems since she was born. She had one side done and then the other. She is doing so well and can't believe she waited so long to do it. She goes to physical therapy 4 times a week, she drives herself there, and doesn't need to use a cane or walker. The only one drawback she has noticed is that her back has been bothering her. She said that her back had to compensate for her hips and now she can use her hips. I guess she is having to retrain her back.
Take care and welcome again,
Lisa

Hi HarleyQuinn,
Am sorry about your spine and chest. You are right these are really great people here. And everyone really has a huge amount of useful information to share... Am glad I found this group.
About this friend's MOM... how long ago did she get it done?? where did she get it done from? It would be really great if you could give me any information about it. From what you say I think I should also get it done soon. Should not delay it..
Thank you so much for all the information. Takecare, Raj

Hi Jeanna,
Thanks for the welcome.. You are absolutely right about the people here in the group..
ITs great that you are in med school.. Do you aspire to become a surgeon someday cause you would really understand this AS thing.. I have lots of docs in my family and seeing them study I thought this was not for me :)
Takecare, Raj

Hi Raj, My friends Mom had the first surgery about 5 months ago. She had it done here in Southern California. A few weeks later, after her Drs felt she was doing well they did the other hip. She had to use a walker for a short time after the surgery to get used to the new hip, but soon switched to a cane, then nothing. We were amazed that the surgeries were very close to one another and that she was up and around so quickly after. Take care and good luck Lisa

Hi Raj I had my right hip replaced at the age of 24, in 1975. It wore out after 15 years, and I had it replaced again in 1990. It was successful both times. I've been very active the whole time, the only restrictions I've had are: I gave up hockey because the skating hurt; I can't ride horses, and can only ride certain models of ski-doos. Other than that, I can hike all day, climb, canoe, lift weights (no squats), and do just about anything. (Tho' my golf swing isn't very pretty...:) Advice?... shed any excess weight, stretch lots, and generally try to live a healthy lifestyle. Rest and sleep are very important, as well as diet. By diet, I just mean eating sensibly and moderately, nothing special. There are plenty of good folks here to keep you company along the way, and feel free to ask them or e-mail me if you'd like. There are so many different ways that this can affect people. My experience may be useful to you, or perhaps not. I do wish you well. I can remember the sheer joy of losing all that pain after the first hip replacement. Take care, Greg
