keep smiling... it matters! FYI-Because of its literal definition ("fear of the marketplace"), agoraphobia is often misunderstood as a fear of crowds or a fear of open spaces. The clinical definition of agoraphobia is a fear of situations or places "from which escape might be difficult (or embarrassing) or in which help may not be available in the event" of a panic attack.

Hi DeeDee, I can't speak to your foot (although AS can affect feet), but as for your meds, it depends what you're on and how long you're on it. Also, it depends on the individual.

Some people can take NSAIDS for a long time with no gastro problems, others (like me) can't. I've been on prescription NSAIDS for a year and a half, had ulcers beginning within 8 months. Also, NSAIDS in long term use have been found to weaken our bone structure. Not good for people with AS.

You might want to see about getting one of the DMARDS or biologics. People have had very good results with them. Side effects range from minimal to not great (understatement), but frankly, as far as I'm concerned, anything that will halt the progression of this disease and give my body a rest for a few years is worth trying.

Also, take a look at the No Starch/Low Starch Diet. Many of us have had very good results in lowering pain and inflammation levels by eliminating or lowering starch intake.

And make sure that you stretch out every day and exercise as much as you can handle. This will stretch/strengthen your muscles, enabling them to do their jobs well, as well as strengthening your bones if you do weight training. Not only that, it can help you keep your weight down, ease the effects of stress/depression and many other things.

If you don't currently exercise, I would get your fitness level established by an expert and talk to your doctors first. Then start where you are. For us, exercise isn't always measured by the half hour/hour, but by the minute. And every little bit helps.

Hugs,

Kat
