Hi David,
Many moons ago I went to see my Rheumy after first being diagnosed with AS. I told him that I was feeling depressed. What was his answer?........................................What have you got to feel depressed about!.....I nearly fell of my chair with disbelief. Well he was only the head of dept, what do you expect. That was 12 years ago & is still stuck in my mind.

Last, but not least. A short time after that I went to see my then very unspportive GP (Dr), as I was in absolute agony with my AS. He told me that he couldn't do anything more for me & that I'd just have to get on with it.

All true life facts, I can laugh about it now, but couldn't at the time

George.

Hey John, wonder what he would have to say about a five year trials?:)

Hey David,

Sounds as though you are getting somewhat of a round around. It seems to be a normal thing for most of us ASers.

When I first started having probelms one doctor told me is was a sprain or strained muscle in my lumbar area pulling on my buttock muscles makng it feel like my talebone. Your elbows are puffy and swollen but your to young to have arthritis.

Another doctor treated me with valium and tylenol #3 when I told him it helped for about a week and wore off he told me my pain was in my head. Two other doctors besides him told me my pain was in my head and I should seek mental help not medical help.

After a CT Scan when I hurt my back in 1984 the orthopedic specialist told me there was nothing wrong and sent me back to work. A month later I was having a crushed disc removed and another ruptured disc repaired. The neurosurgeon said he read the CT scan and the Ortho's reports which clearly stated I had a ruptured disc with HNP and my surgery could have been prevented. In a letter to the insurance company the Ortho stated he had no explaination why he sent me back to work.

Two rheumies have told me I didn't have AS because I was not fused at the time of seeing them but only have deterioration of the sacro and hips with some overgrowth which they could not explain.

It's been the story of my life.

Hey Davo, I laugh through the tears-

Been there!! "oh, you'll just take piroxicam for the rest of your life"....

Thankfully I stopped Vioxx after six months back in 2001....I just hope that other drugs are safe....you can never be too careful!!!!

Peace

Howdy, Pete:

They learn the words like placebo, but don't seem to know enough about the statistics involved. Certainly he would say something like 'long-term placebo!' I don't know what he would say to 50% instead of 30%, either. 'Anomaly'?

If 30% of his AS patients were still with him after 5 years I would be stunned enough to ask what drugs he accidentally prescribed! Although...according to Ralph Nader and Dr. Sidney Wolfe, 98% of medical casualties (those left alive) do not realize they would have been better off by not going to the doctors. Strong bet a large portion of these went to rheumatologists--and that was even before the Vioxx debacle.

Best to You,
John

Hi,

I get so upset when they rant on about another new drug or one reinvented for another purpose (ultimatley to boost sales or preserve exclusive rights) and they claim it may be useful......etc when it only just shows a few % above placebo.......

When I asked Ebringer why rheumies were so reluctant to consider the diet option he replied 'because they are like sheep', meaning of course that they respond to the dog with the loudest bark (M A Khan?). Not a very flattering description of their mental processes but at least sheep are more cuddly than DragonSlayers.

And what's he then that says I play the villain

Linc,

I too was "smile challenged" at the ridiculous statement and I got the feeling the Dr was afterwards, but they were just trying to get the inflammation down with the tools they have and the impact this disease is having on me.......

but no point chucking more petrol on the fire, this is akin to using explosives to put out an oil fire.....ok if it works, big sigh of relief, but the oil field is in danger of igniting. Been there before .
My rheumy is just back form Japan from a Celebrex conference I asked her about cardio safety and she reckons it is much heart safer, vioox was an issue due to the use of a different molecule, I still do n;t understand what is what but she gave me some words I'm trying to google them, but taking it easy:

cox2 inhibition sulfonyl sulfone sulfonamide

I have n't checked yet on Bextra maybe later in the week.

David
