Right, Timo-- to your point of view atheism may not be a belief system. No offense intended. But we needn't wander off into the quagmire of ontological semantics; while metaphysics can be fun, the topic is joy.
I've been in foxholes with all Hades breaking loose. Quite right it's very scary. You spend a lot of time trying to become one with the Earth in ways "nature lovers" can't begin to imagine, all the while praying frantically that some higher power might get you out of this alive. A lot of deals get made with G-d during such times, even by those who renege later.
It's an interesting phenomenon to observe.
