I have never found mechanical substitutes for human skills and perception to be of much use.

A good massage therapist -- I find the blind ones here in China the best and most cost effective -- is able to feel the slightest tissue dysfunction and knead it to break down the scar tissue.

Inflammation damages the fascia tissue all over my body and that causes a loss in range of movement. That loss in range of movement just helps the injury grow into a big, painful knot.

Exacta mentioned the use of Active Release Therapy (ART) by a chiropractor. I think it is similar to what I mentioned above except that the patient is made to move the effected body part.

I use a tennis ball between my shoulder blades and lean against a wall to roll it around on my back. I use a lot of force. It brings relief.

I hop this helps

Thanks.

I have taken 3 weeks of ayurvedic massage four months back. Yes. I agree. Human massaging is better. Now planning for a week starting from tomorrow. In between ayurvedic massage sessions, I would like to try mechanical means.

Jay I have a percussion massager, mine is called a Thumper but if you search for percussion massager you'll find others too. I find it very helpful. It massages differently than regular mechanical massagers and it penetrates deeply. In addition to AS I am an amputee (left leg) due to an accident and first got the Thumper at my physical therapist's recommendation to help with muscle spasms. I later started using it on my back etc and I now use it at least once a day. It does help. Hope you feel better!
