OK... weekend is coming and I want my mind to unwind.... so question for the group, which do you enjoy more, Sunrise or Sunset?

In spring/summer I enjoy a good sunrise with no noise other than the birds chirping... however, my vote goes to Sunsets, they seem much more colorful with variations of red streaking through the sky. I really enjoyed the sunsets when I lived on the Gulf Coast in Florida and then out in Arizona.

I am also not a morning person... so sun usually up by the time I get out of bed

Sunsets 1
Sunrises 0

Next vote...

tim, aloha

the most beautiful sunrise i ever saw was on my second trip to tahiti...the plane arrived about 5/6am...
the sun was just sparkling thru a clearing rainshower and the full moon hung over orohena so close looking
you'd think you could reach out and touch it.

never saw a beach and a sunset i didn't like.

I live beside the Fraser river where it meets the ocean and there are no mountains to block my view of the most incredible sunsets in the world. Every evening, summer or winter, a colourful masterpiece covers the sky and makes us wonder whether tomorrows sunset will be as glorious as todays.

I vote for sunsets,

Hi Tim....
I prefer sunsets..as these bones make it hard to be moving around at sunset to enjoy..BUT my most beautiful memory was when I was a teen and was able to go with my two close friends to see the Pope come to San Antonio. We got there at dawn by bus and I was so so tired because we had been up late the night before..teen remember? But when I remember waking up and seeing the most beautiful sunrise..it was amazing...thousands of folks coming together for something so special to me that I will never forget it...

Wow! I am sure it is a memory you will always hold near and dear to your heart.

Both Tim...I love them both.

I will admit though, since I no longer pull all nighters and still make it to work, I see more sun sets than I do sun rises....

Enjoy, and dont forget the camera.

Definitely sunset. The most beautiful sunset for me would have to be while we were camping on Lake Superior. To hear the waves crashing in and to see the sky, red as can be and this big red round ball of fire slowly going down. Careful not to blink or I would miss it. Then another sunset on Lake Michigan. The one thing I remember most about this was being up on a hill near a tree where monarch butterflies were coming to. This tree was covered with hundereds of butterflies. What a sight.

Have a good weekend.

You need to come to NH to see a sunset over the ocean....trust me....you do...honest....tell old whats his name...

I will go with sunrise when I am running on a Saturday morning, the sun comes up and feels so good. When I lived in Minnesota I really liked the sunsets there. No mountains to get in the way. I took many pictures of the sunsets.
Posted By: OldGeorge Re: Sunrise or Sunset? - 02/04/06 12:01 AM
"Old who"

Clear this up for me Lori, If you live in NH, you can see the Atlantic ocean to the east of you, right? Or, is NH an island and the Atlantic ocean is then west of NH?

So, when you see these great sunsets in NH, in which direction do you see them? You easterners do know that the sun sets in the west?

I have to go find a map to see if there is any ocean west of where you live in NH.

Old what's his name.

Dunno. Guess I like both but I don't roll out of bed early enough for sunrise so guess I'll have to go with those sunsets.
Prettiest I ever saw was out west. You know when I went through Gallap, NM one night years ago, I saw a full moon sit on the earth. Not kiddding. Larger than one could possibly imagine. Something about proximity and the time of year I guess. Lit up the earth all around it. It was almost scarey.

Yes George, but you can still see the pretty colors as the sun goes down....dont be difficult.

here is a pretty one.

Posted By: Dakotadan Re: Sunrise or Sunset? - 02/04/06 01:28 AM
I never really paid attention to which I liked best until I got to Tucson. The AZ sky is totally unbelievable! On New Years day I started to take pictures of the sunset every day. I planned to make a slide show of the years sunsets. BUT, some days the sky was clear so there wasn't a sunset to speak of so I changed it the years best sunsets:) I have about 17 pictures so far. I missed a couple good ones just because I was taking an unplanned afternoon nap.

The sunrise is great to but I'm not awake to enjoy them...I'm a night owl.

Here's three:

Definately a night owl - love sunsets.

I drove truck for 20 + years and have seen many sunsets and sunrises but i guess if iam luky enough to wake up for another day i would say susrise.

It depends on what I'm doing. I see many sun rises as I'm heading to work. But I also love a good sunset as I'm out for a walk on the trail.

I make time to view sunsets. "Sundowners" with friends is tradition, but,.. since I am rarely up early enough to view sunrises, they seem to hold more amazement for me. So quiet.

Hey Lori,

I am guessing that pic is from when you visited Arizona... am I correct?

I like both but I like sunsets because they never seem to be the same. I enjoy the sunrises that give a glow to everything it just feels so cheery. Those glowy days are usually warm and I love to let the sun hit my back. It just takes the pain away. Unfortunately I don't get up early very often. As a child I used to get up early and ride my bike down the middle of a normally busy road. It was so calm and peaceful. Hehe, the average parent would probably spank me for doing that but I was from a small town and the only traffic during that time were logging trucks and I could hear the jake brakes for miles. Sorry for getting off the subject but it was nice to remember the little things that made me happy.

Thanks for the great post!

Hey Tim,

I think your questions depends a lot on where you are when you see the sunrise or sunset. Personally I have always enjoyed sunsets over the sunrises. I do have to admit though I have seen some beautiful sunrises on both coast, but I have seen more beautiful sunsets.

Brent
Posted By: BLESTER Re: Sunrise or Sunset? - 02/04/06 04:20 AM
Hehehe George,

Us easterners do have a few peninsulas and islands at the coast. I have seen a few sunsets over the ocean here also. I do had to admit I saw a lot more of them when I lived on the coast in California though.

Sunsets have too much goin' on to even compare to a good sunrise visually. More color, more time to getready for it as we see the sun sink in th sky and the mystery of a dark star riddled sy to follow. I akin ot you favor Florida Gulf Coast sunsets.

Sunrises win out when it comes to the ears. Love the bird and the squirrel and general critter chatter that roars during a good sunrise.

Symbolically sunrises win out too with all that the "dawning of a new day" rah rah stuff but a pragmatist who isa dreamer at the core gonn take sunset every time.
Posted By: Moonbees Re: Sunrise or Sunset? - 02/04/06 04:48 AM
SUNSETS!!!!

over the ocean in Okinawa Japan

in the mountains of Tennessee

over Alabama's Gulf Coast

over Logan Martin Lake...the beloved home of MARINA BAY...

SO, my vote SUNSET!!!

From another water baby who was raised on the north shore of LI, I love both.

Red sky at night is sailors delight, red sky in morning, sailors take warning.

Great question

I love sunsets most. Probably because I live in the west. I've never seen a sunrise over the ocean. but someday.

George teasing Lori about sunsets in the east reminded me of when my parents had taken my sister and her husband to the Oregon coast for a weekend. My mom woke up when it was still dark out, and my brother in law was sitting outside. (they had an oceanside hotel room) She asked him what he was doing outside. He told her he had never seen a sunrise over the ocean so was waiting til the sun came up to see it. She kind of giggled and told him it would be a looonnnnnggg wait since the sun rises in the east.

Hi Tim,

I think i would go for sunset too...

But for a differnt reason... not the beauty as both are equally beautiful, but the reason that i am relieved of my day's work and can relax a little. Morning, i don't time to wait for a moment and wonder at the beauty of it. Lately work has been such a bore travelling, it bogs me down. Evenings are a relief.

hi
i too agree it depends on where u r. bein in the uk it also depends on the time of year. in summer there r some wonderful sunsets and sunrises. in winter there r great sunrises but to me the sunsets r a bit of a washout. but if i really had to choose i think the summer SUNSETS have it for me.
take care

Hey Tim,

How is the tally coming? I seem to have lost count since yesterday. With the weather here in NC being extra warm for this time of year it has been hard to see a good sunset or sunrise lately due to the clouds hovering all the time. Sure would be nice to see one again.

Hard to choose-I'm not a morning person, but in winter, and being at the office before the sun rises, and leaving after the sun sets, I'm happy to get a glimpse of the sun rise in the morning. I saw a beautiful one Thursday morning over Lake Ontario (my office is a 5 minute walk away), and my heart sings when I see the beauty of it. I also enjoy the setting of the sun. In answer to which one I like more, I would simply have to say "yes"

Sunsets!

I rarely get to see a good sunrise,... in mornings my fav thing in the world is on a still morning when I have the chance to see a mist rolling up off the surface of the river at our cottage. Nature's beauty at it's best!

Hugs to you for yet another enjoyable thread, Tim!

Hello All! Long time no speak!

I would have to say there is nothing better then a sunset....my family has a cottage in Bayfield on Lake Huron and it was written up as having one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world.

One of my favourite things to do is to pour a glass of wine and head down to the beach and watch the sunset.....it is breathtaking!

I vote sunset.
The colours are sometimes amazing. It often seems a truly magical time of day.

I am a night owl and really seem to come alive later in the day. needless to say, even though the sunrises are beautiful, I also am rarely awake for them.

Hi! another Amy!!! I'm Ames too well, when I was in high school we lived in a town where we were surrounded by almond orchards. certain times of the year after they trimmed them, they made a big burn pile...usually in summer and tho I wasn't an early riser...I would wake up early and get some stuff together, an old pot(one that mom wouldn't flog me over too badly ) some tea, mugs, sugar and some milk. I'd go out to that burn pile that was all burnt out but still smoldering and in the dark of morning, you could still see all the orange embers blazing. I'd move those around and add some wood until I had a little fire and boil water on that and make what my parents called "billy tea". it was wonderful, smoky and sweet with the suagr and milk and it was just in time for sunrise. it was so quiet and perfect and so bright crimson, pink and then purple and then it faded into blue. that is one of my favourite memories. to answer the question, I don't get up early...as a matter of fact I've said for a number of years that mornings were made for sleeping and it was a shame that making a living had to interefere but I don't know if i could decide. because here we have gorgeous sunsets too! one is quiet and perfect and pristine and the other is sleepy and brilliant and settling! hmmm...I love them both but see sunsets more often. thanks for listening to me prattle! Ames

Hi Heather: This photo was taken a couple of weeks ago on one of my Sunday hikes. It is a sunset over Paul Lake which is in an area a short distance from Kamloops. I have not been posting Sunday hike pictures because I have been in the midst of a computer upgrade. I will post other Sunday hike pictures as I find time. All of you, keep well and keep in touch...Tom

Nice question Tim.
I had to really think about this one for awhile. I intently watched the sunset yesterday eve, then got up early this a.m. to watch the sunrise (with camera - am I getting obsessed w/this board or what?)
In the end...it is the sunrise.
For me, nothing can compare to the fresh beauty in the dawn of a new day, being saturated in creation’s light... overwhelmed by the majesty of it all and thanking God for another day where such beauty can heal and give strength to body and soul.

Sunrise. Sunset. Two sides of the same coin. Personally, I prefer getting up over coming down, but heck it's February in Quebec, and I'll take any sun I can get--up or down.

Too funny... I have really enjoyed reading many of the stories, get a little story with the Kicker. Yep, we will need a follow up question at some point, Christina was always good for that in the past.

Oh... and my favorite sunset of all time was watching it set over the Grand Canyon... photographers lined up all across the Canyon, colors changing in the Canyon.. very breathtaking. Was also very windy!

Pete, you have to make it up that way with your camera once.

You're right Tom, not many sunsets lately. We set a record in January for the most continuous days of rain in BC.

Boy, did we ever get hammered by those strong winds a couple of mornings ago. Lots of damage in the areas next to the ocean, especially near the ferry dock in Ladner area.

No more talking about sunsets, trying not to be difficult for Lori. She is too nice to get upset.
