I was just curious who exercises!!!

I work out six days a week:

M T TH FR - Workout with weights
W AND S - Mountain bike at least 10 miles!!

I noticed that when my AS symptoms start and I exercise, I feel a million times better. When I first started to workout I did more stretching then anything. I then progressed to light weight and eventually added more weight. I am 30 take Celebrex and sulfazine twice daily. I have never been so strong in my life, and my AS symptoms are at a all time low. I have about two semi bad days a month and maybe 7 days of pain a year.

I've been an avid Mountain Biker for the past 15 years, been active most of my life (sports, weights, etc). Ride almost every day if I can (usually ends up average 4-5 days ). Make annual trips to Moab (although walk around some of the old rock piles I didn't used to). Make it a point to live close to trails, hills where I can ride straight from home. It's just been the last 4 years that the AS has reexaberated and I've noticed a little setback, but attribute/hope most is to just aging (38 now). Have noticed a little more of the wrist/hand cramping problems. Also had a good spill last year and felt it all through my body and back. Nowadays, try to "ride to ride another day", but can still ride hard, take chances (but wear the pads at Moab now). Winters can be hard to get out (still do if roads are dry). I do the stationary bike and gym in winter but not the same. Good when you can enjoy the exercise. Went and got a headlight last month and doing night rides (a blast). I think my neighbors think I'm crazy, always riding around. But hey... put yourself in my position.

It sure can make a difference with the AS in the summer times (and just stress relief) but I haven't quite been able to shake it into remission. Have had to stop some stretching and lifting as of late, but doing the basic exercises or I just seem to hurt more. Currently on Voixx. Have had stomach problems with Sulindac, Diclofenac and Celebrex. Trying enzymes and other stuff now. Made major changes in diet this year seeming to help a little. Also been a smoker through the years, and that's stopped as I know it can't be helping. Going to keep on cycling as long as I can do it - believe its helped get me along further and help beat what I can. My biggest problem now is that I work an office job, and the continual sitting seems to be racking the back. Can get home late, exercise late, problems sleeping and dragging into work. Having to keep restructuring & discipling my life more, but positive and life is still good and getting better - cruel world won't get the best of me.

Hi Damian,

I am curious as I like to exercise myself, are there any machines you stay clear off? I cannot doo the flat back press (needless to say) but most machines are OK. rowing hurts like hell though.

Regards,

Mark (33) Amsterdam

I can do much of everything in the gym. However at first I had to slowly break into it. Try flat bench but with only 60 pounds or so for about 6 months then think about adding weight. The best thing to remember when trying exercises that hurt is try and stretch the area more then build muscle. The exercises that you can’t do are the ones that I would focus on more. You will not believe the results!!!! Also I am not too sure of your condition but I have very little fusion, only in my tailbone, so it’s not too bad. However when my AS was in full swing I could hardly get out of bed. I started to work out een though it hurt, and it made a huge difference. After Starting the treatment of celebrex and sulfazine, my symptoms pretty much ended. I hope this information helps you!!! Take care

Yes the night Rides are a blast. I just bought one of those Xenon lights for my helmet and I am having a blast!!! I too work most of the day in my office. I work out of my home, but I try to ride my bike during 10:00 and 12:00 every day. Exercise seems to real help me, I was just curious if other AS sufferers exercise.

HI,

I exercise daily unless something throws a curve ball at me like an all evening soccer tournament that my daughter is in. These times are few and far between.

Bike, bike and more bike in a spin class. I love it!!!

I do (like to exercise)!! Can't live without it -- I'd sooner go with out meds than exercise. Heading out in a few minutes to walk a few miles When I first got VERY sick (the Event that finally led me to the doctors a year and a half ago), I couldn't walk to the end of the driveway. That was scary. When I lived in Europe I was doing 20 km every Sat and Sunday, and 10 kms after work most evenings. Then plantar fascitis hit, but still I kept going. Now I walk 2-3 miles a day, along with some stretching and light weights stuff. But the walking is key for me. I moved to NM for the warmth, and so I could walk every day of the year.

Hi Damian,

Until Easter of this year I worked out 3-4 times a week for a few hours. Begin with stretching, then stationary bike, circuit weights some more stretching and finally lap swimming. Was excellent workout and I was in good shape.

However, liver enzymes got elevated due to medications (azulfadine twice daily 500mg and naproxen twice daily 500mg). Was on each a little less than 7 yrs.

Hopefully your liver holds out... but I did notice my meds. became a little less effective as time wore on, but I believe this is do to the leaky gut syndrome with the NSAID's.

Currently I follow the NSD/LSD, but energy is not there to perform the same workout. But it is getting better as I slowly detox my liver.

Good luck with the workouts, I believe it is important,

Tim

Hi Damian
I road cycle 4-5 times per week,do weight training 3 times per week, tennis once a week and spinning classes twice a week.Although its not always easy because of pain or tiredness it is very important to stay active and find that fitness keeps me more positive.
I only have 1cm of flexibility left in my spine,so im hanging on to that for as long as i can.
A few years ago i was unable to exersise because of pain, but seemed have moved on to another phase of the desease.Has anyone experienced anything like this?

Keep going
