Just want to say I can relate to anyone suffering AS pains at the moment! I started feeling too good again, and eased up way too much! I recently taught 5 different Raw Food Holiday Classes around NW Oregon, and while the menu is very very low in starch, it did have a cashew mayo for the vegan "walnut turkey wraps" and it had the most amazing raw pumpkin pie in the universe, oh, and it had a Brazil nut cheese ball which included cashews. Anyhow, I ate so much of these starchier items at the classes, and with leftovers from the classes, and then over the weekend while at my family's Thanksgiving and then again while catering an event at a winery over the long weekend. I might as well have been bathing in cashew cream, damnit.

Flared right up this weekend. Ouchie. Ouchie. The pain is starting to subside, I got lots of rest over the past 48 hours, drank some fresh green juice, went back to eating no starch foods. But darnit, I just felt so good again, I thought I was invincible, at least strong enough to handle starchy cashews. I have been really good about avoid all grains, dairy, white sugar, potatoes, corn, etc, but its those little cashews in so many raw food recipes that always get the better of me!

Be well all! Keep the faith in healing! Which I will say is very hard to keep when feeling so much pain!

Each time I ease up too much and this happens to me, I become even more convinced in the power of food and the right diet!

xoxo

I'm now a KICK AS (and Kick IBD) success story!! After going low starch Paleo to heal my gut, I can now eat nearly all starches, grains & foods without inflammation, flare-ups, or pain. Sorry to hear about your pain. Glad you know what to do to get yourself all healed up and feeling better. Sometimes when I overdo it physically I get worse, does this happen to you?

Take care!

Diet change has improved my RA. I feel best eating raw veggies and some fruits and avoiding grains, sugars, nightshades, beans and dairy. Sed rate dropped from 65 to 19, but it took over a year.

Ya, this past year I have treaded pretty lightly on exercise. I found that sometimes after yoga I felt better, but other times I felt worse! Could have other factors in play, like what I was eating that week... if my body was fatigued... but yes, I am still pretty careful with exercise. I am starting to look forWard to doing more soon though, as overall I have been feeling better. I think if I find the right type of exercise it is bound to help me overall, seems like it should at least!

And I was completely physically exhausted on Friday night, I literally collapsed after a couple days of catering, crashed and burned, then had to prepare dinner for my mom's overnight stay, and then cater again the next day. So running on empty and re-fueling with cashews is likely the cause! Errh.

But at the moment, the bones in my hips hurt beyond words, and I have had burning in my upper back and behind my shoulder blade pretty heavy the past couple days too. AS is sure one heck of a nasty disease sometimes!!!

xoxo

Andrea, I'm sorry you are in pain again frown. It's never fun and I know what you mean about feeling good and then letting yourself slip. Hang in there and remember that you'll come out of this soon. I know better too but sometimes I tell myself that I need to indulge from time to time knowing full well the consequences. The pain is just a huge reminder why we do what we do but sheesh, sometimes a peace of pumpkin chocolate chip cheesecake is worth it, lol. At least that's what I thought in the moment before the pain!

Sometimes I read Dr. McDougall's website and he has articles about nuts and vegetable oils causing inflammation in arthritics. I'm postive you know more about this stuff than me since you seem to be well most of the time and I am still getting there slowly. But I wanted to share with you anyway, just in case. Last week I ate alot of almonds and I was'nt doing as well as other weeks when I did'nt have as many nuts. Those are just some of my thoughts, hope your hips feel better. smile

Sorry you are suffering again and I hope it passes soon.

Its amazing how easily you forget how bad it can be when you are feeling good (maybe part of natures mechanism eg if women remembered childbirth they wouldn't have anymore children lol) and upsetting when, after all the time eating carefully and hopefully healing that you can't get away with much.

Yes I also become more and more convinced about the power of food and the right diet unfortunately I haven't managed to stop myself from eating too much of foods I should only have a little of eg chocolate and nuts

Thank you guys for all the support!!!

The PAIN is continuting to subside. I am feeling better. slowly....

My hubby reminded me that it was this exact time of the month last month when this same thing happened. Seems once a month, I get wild food cravings and literally go bananas for starchy things. Wonderful.

Last month it was a damn raw food wrap with "sweet potato rice" that ruined 48 hours of my life, this time it was all those lovely cashew "cheeze" spreads over the holiday. Next month, I shall hopefully have more resistance!!

xoxo

Oh, and over the past week, I have created some amazing low/no starch recipes I shall post soon!

Hot & Sour Soup
Sweet & Sour Stir-fry Sauce
Chinese Style Dragon Sauce (great for wraps & veggie bowls)
Vegan Red Pepper "Creamy" Indian Curry Sauce over Veggies
Hazelnut Chocoalte Truffles
Pecan Pie Bars (though the pecans are testing starchy, so may sub in walnuts)
Raw Grain Free Granola

♥

Yes... know very well the invincible feeling. Good to hear getting better.

I went on mini vacation down here in ARgentina with family over Thanksgiving Day weekend... ran into a place that grows pecans (brought in original seeds from Texas). Gosh were they good...

I bought some pistachios as well.. in States I tolerate well, here not as much for some reason. I could feel it in the neck and low back a bit after eating a few too many pistachios.

Just wanted to say, I totally broke out of the flare! I also broke out a new bottle of iodine and was super careful the past few days.

Today I felt great though. My energy & attitude went way up. I had an awesome green juice at dinner, (apple, ginger, lemon, celery, parsley) and then made a warmed broccoli, garlic, celery, parsley, pureed soup with fresh cilantro. And some raw raspberry sorbet(dairy free, refined sugar free) and raw hazelnut cacao truffles and I have a general sense of euphoria in my body right now! Thank goodness!

And lunch today was an awesome salad with argula, smoked salmon, hazelnuts, cucumbers, and a naturally sweet fig vinegar dressing. So yummy.

And breakfast was a huge fruit smoothie, a raw sesame/cacao "milk" shake, and a small bowl of homemade starch free granola & hazelnut milk. I will post granola recipe soon too.

I love food! And I really love food that makes me feel good!!

So thankful that even with all the limitations in my current diet, I can still find great pleasure in eating great food. I just have to stick to my guns, and just say no to cashews.

xoxo

Just to keep it real, I will note the only pain in my body right now is a little ache in my upper shoulder blades, (around a "1" on a scale of 1 to 10) but I think it is mostly due to damage already done, and having a body not fully aligned properly after years of AS. I am anxious to get with an exercise plan that will hopefully loosen up my body a bit! And for the past 6+ months I usually start the day off pain free, but by the end of the day after sitting at a desk all day at work, or working long hours in my catering kitchen, my shoulders and upper back ache by the end of the day, but hopefully with exercise and ajusted body mechanics I can over come this too. wink
