Has anyone had success with fasting to cure a flare?

Yes, my husband Jon usually does this for a day or so if he flares up from accidentally eating starch.

He doesn't do a full on water only fast but rather a mono-diet. He just eats green grapes and drinks rooibos tea (red bush tea) and water.

YES, YES, YES!!!! Fasting is a god-send for me if I've eaten something to provoke a flare. Most of the time I will eat a handful of green grapes at each "meal" and just drink coffee and water. If it's really bad, I eat nothing at all and just drink coffee and water. It breaks down a flare in 24 hours usually.

The best way for me because I hate being hungry and feeling like I've gone without food is to do a dinner to dinner fast. It's still 24 hours but at least I feel like I haven't gone an entire day without eating.

Good luck!

Hi, Yatesy:

I used to only use fasting to break my flares. And I wish I had never been given NSAIDs!

Once I fasted 20 days and had a very extended remission.

But usually a fast of four to six days can take down the worst flares. Have done a few 11 day fasts to beat ulcers (due to NSAIDs) and also severe hip bursitis from the AS.

I do water-only fasts. If interested, my friend Dr. Garten wrote about fasting in his book "Civilized Diseases and Their Circumvention," and I have that chapter available for those interested (via email: anzaltopo@yahoo.com; no attachments on KA PM system).

bon appetit,
John

Thanks Chelsea, John and Lauren,
I've just recently arrived in AS land unfortunately but while the medical professionals are conducting tests and ruminating I've been researching and I started the NSD and no dairy a week and a half ago - took NSAID's for 2 days and after acid reflux, and gut pain ditched them. The last 2 days I ate very little as I've started juicing vegies and fruit and low and behold I've reduced the pain by at least %70 - which made me think a 'fast' could be amazing.
Will check out the links and plan a week off work to fast - I'm so happy my change in diet is working , although 2 days of NSAID's might have helped too.

Thanks again, fingers crossed hey - 44 yr old lady didn't expect arthritis just yet!

Hello Yatesy,

I have fasted up to 3 days... sometimes 1 day will be water only. If more than 1 day it is usually apples as only food.

I find they help as well, but if I flare, I am not afraid to take a little Ibuprofin either. But I rarely flare now.

YES! I am a total believer in the power of a juice fast. I recently completed a 14 day juice fast, and it was the most incredible thing I have ever done for my body. All of my AS & IBS pain went away during the fast. I now fast for 24 hours if I feel pain or bad IBS coming on. Juice fasting knocks it right out! I believe green juices are natures true healer & pain medicine.

I also started taking a potent dose of tumeric extract "curcumin" daily, and it is really effective and better for the body than NSAIDS. http://www.turmeric-curcumin.com/ Another AS'er recommended the curcumin, and I am so thankful he did!

here is a blog I wrote about it my recent juice fasting: http://bettyrawker.com/2012/03/25/day-9-of-my-30-day-juice-fast/

xoxo,
Andrea

I'm now a KICK AS (and Kick IBD) success story!! After going low starch Paleo to heal my gut, I can now eat nearly all starches, grains & foods without inflammation, flare-ups, or pain. I used a modified SCD diet approach (minus dairy! plus cacao ♥). Cheers to healing & thriving again! I blog at http://www.forestandfauna.com/about/

Thanks again,
I did a juice fast yesterday and already feel better.
I had an appointment with a leading naturopath today who told me I have an intestinal parasite and fungus which has sparked off the AS symptoms. Apparently it will take a month to get rid of using bicarbonate soda and a diet of LSD and no sugar whatsoever.
I'm excited - cant wait to see it work!!!
In the meantime I have an apointment with a rheumy today so will see if he concurs or disagrees!

Rheumatologist may not concur if he really believes you have AS, but don't let that get you down. They are just too used to thinking there is no cure for AS, even though the parallels with "reactive arthritis" are huge -- same symptoms, strong correlation with HLA-B27 gene.

Wow,
Rheumy said " I think you need a massage , maybe a swim" OMG / unbelievable - so glad I've done my own research and found a great naturopath.
And so glad I have kickas to go to for community and advice.
On on with new way of eating - not quite ready to find a new doctor anyway - not to mention the costs of specialists and tests - phew!
Garlic prawns for dinner witn spinach and sprouts - life ain't that bad smile
