If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

walked with hubby 1 mile, 20 minutes then walked ~1/2 mile, ~ 20 minutes to inspect the beaver pond Good job! Any more progress on the beaver dam from last year? this is a new "pond" at the other end of the creek. the farmers drained the other one. poor beavers. but good for the trees! beavers zero, trees one. haven't been there lately to see if the beavers have regrouped. this new one was just a creek with a small pond a year ago and this summer slowly started transforming into a much bigger pond. but it looks like the farmers cleared away some of the dam. as the water level looks a bit lower. either way, very cool to watch nature at work. though am always sad to see trees cut down, by man or beaver. but so long as the beavers don't come into our yard and devour our trees! the creek / pond is only ~1/4 mile away. but without a creek on our yard, i hope that means we're safe.

ah nice! I even posted my own instructional YouTube of me practicing to do a swim flip turn!! That video is hilarious! I posted it on my fb. So lemme ask you, do you do the tuck/flip/kick off from the wall thing, so that you are on your back, and THEN twist so that you are back to facing down again, or do you sort of start the twist before you are kicking off? Can't decide which way to do it.

I did it - swam 1/2 mile and walked 1.5 miles. In all a successful day exercize wise. Sue, so sad for the beavers! Glad they have a nice new place to dam. Dow, I actually do a weird flip. I start the flip as if I were going to do the torque thing, but then 1/2 way through the flip, I slowly twist around under water and kick off with my feet facing down. I had two of the masters swim coaches give me tips on NOT increasing torque... Not too fast, but no pain either. Lon - you inspire me with your determination to shovel snow and chip ice. Go TEAM!

ah, thank you Erica, your technique is the way I'm gravitating. Pushing off backwards just feels weird, and then spinning around while trying to return to swimming..hard to coordinate, always seem to get off kilter. Feels better when I'm mostly turned over by the time I'm pushing off, at least that way i can see where I'm going and not in danger of introducing myself to the ladies aquatics class!!

Ran 3.11 miles (5k) this morning in 30:11 minutes. The off to the allergist for allergy testing. I am allergic to most of the trees, and to grass, with a little bit of cat. I will be starting allergy shots.

Dow, said: """ So lemme ask you, do you do the tuck/flip/kick off from the wall thing, so that you are on your back, and THEN twist so that you are back to facing down again, or do you sort of start the twist before you are kicking off?""""" you are just killing me out here. I tried to tuck, flip, kick in my office and nearly killed myself!!Is it easier when you are in the water? And I wasn't sure which wall. my books start flying through the air! When I twist before ...kicking off... I ended up in the hall way in pain...

All kidding aside, I'm really interested in what it is with swimming that helps the pain. There is another member who is often there at night when I'm doing laps, he just uses those aqua floaty things, and goes into the deep area and floats there for about 40 minutes. I finally talked to him tonight when he wanted to know what that crazy contraption was that I swim with (my waterproof iPod housing). Turns out he says that he suffers from some form of arthritis (not RA, I asked...thinking about our WendyR) and that he can go from awful pain when he gets into the water and sometimes can leave pain-free afterwards.
One theory is that the water and the floats allows him to gently use his muscles, increasing circulation and better blood flow, but by using the floats creates a situation where there is effectively zero resistance and the muscles aren't stressed and possibly damaged like they might be with traditional exercise.
I think in my case the breathing is a BIG part of why I get a benefit from swimming, it often feels like when I really push myself and get to the point where I have to keep myself really calm and control my breaths in order to do the flip turns and maintain form is when I feel the best afterwards.
What do you guys think?
