Welcome to KickAS! Like everyone else, I'm very sorry you needed to find us. But doesn't it make all the difference in the world, knowing there are people who relate?

Iritis first diagnosed in 1991, presently recurrent and steroid resistant.
Tested HLA B27 positive in 1996.
AS diagnosed October of 2011.

Putting most of my eggs in the NSD and exercise basket, using only TENS, massage, heat and ice, and NSAIDS (sparingly) for pain. Drops for iritis as flare necessitates. Looking back I feel I would have been diagnosed with AS years ago, if I had found a rheumy earlier than 2011.

You re far away but never alone. There is someone here 24/7 for you.
When I was young I signed up for the U.S Navy. I wasn't totally honest about my condition and had a fear of having a flare while serving. My conscience got the best of me and I explained to my recruiter ( with paperwork ) that I had AS.
He wasn't very nice, I took my verbal beating and walked out thinking I did the right thing in being truthful.
I feel I missed out, I really did want to have that experience.
If they do kick you out, keep your head up, and walk out with your dignity. There is nothing wrong with failing. I admire your courage.

I had been serving for about 4 yrs befor i had the courage to go talk to my medical officer about the pain i was putting up with.
I was deployed over seas when i had a really strong flare were not even codine would nock the top off the pain so when i finished my deployment i went to see the doc on base and he sent me to the specialist who then diagnosed me with AS.
So far i have been able to still do my job with the occasional pain killer to get me through.
I think i probably only have a yr or two left of service befor it becomes to much of a problem but ill try to stay in as long as i can.
