We are thinking of having a Baby. I've been on Humira for a year. Is it safe ? Are there side effects? Any others on Humira that conceived and had a healthy baby? Does it change the DNA of sperm?

Hi oms,

I did a quick PubMed search and unfortunately, there is still very little in the way of information on this subject. Here are the two abstracts I did manage to find, related to your question:

Effects of TNF antagonists on sperm characteristics in patients with spondyloarthritis.

Fertility and reproduction in male patients with ankylosing spondylitis treated with infliximab.

Congrats on your plans for a baby!

Thanks so much! It's pretty scary but we're really excited. I'll read the reports. I really appreciate it mig. I've been looking around a bit also. I can't find much. Am still looking for anyone with success stories. It seems like Women might have to be more careful. I can't find much on Men.

I don't know of any known effects on sperm. but i also use humira, and my wife is 12 weeks pregnant with our first child. Hopefully everything will go well for us. If your particularly worried your should consult your rheumatologist, but I fear he won;t have any definitive answer for you either. Good luck x

Question of risk. Long term risks not known for use of Anti TNF's meds. Personally I would not try for a baby whilst on this med. Not that I'm trying at mo smile. I did stop taking NSAID's for 12 weeks prior to conception of my brilliant son. That's prior to the Anti TNF days.
Risks may be low relating to sperm damage whilst taking Anti TNF.
Not that I'm a med professional, just giving you my opinion. If it were me, I'd stop Anti TNF 6 months prior.

Hello sir. Excuse late reply but only just saw the message.

I have been on infliximab (remicade) for 4.5 years now. We have a 13 month old son (the greatest fella since sliced bread) and I asked my doctor on various occasions about this subject before we got pregnant. Honestly he wasnīt worried about it and said that in men it isnīt something they try to prevent as there doesnīt seem to be a connection.

Over and out
