Hi All

It is nice to meet you all, How long have you suffered AS, I am only 26 and still coming to terms i think.
But I still will not give up on my dream of becoming a registered nurse, some people have been saying maybe i should think of a career change, and i just don't want to, it may take me longer than the rest but i can do it. I have 2 children a girl 6 and a boy 4 in June, they are slowly adjusting to it, like i use to be able to give horse rides on my back, lol. now they have learn't they can't and it hurts mummy, but we have swapped that for me swinging them on the swing before bed. My husband suffers from schizophrenia, and i have been his main carer for 4 years now, but now with this AS it has pushed him that bit further every time to go out of his way to care for me on my bad days. I have woken up today feeling a good day ahead, and am feeling very positive thanks to all of you knowing that We don't need to be alone in this, thank you Toria xx

First, Welcome to KickAS.

Next definitely don't give up on your career choice. Med's can make folks with AS very functional. My mother before the advent of many of the med's worked her entire career with AS as a NYC school teacher whihc kept her on her feet all day long.

I am fused but have worked running from court to court as a lawyer for nearly 25 years with my AS and many physical impediments. As an RN you can open the door to other career opportunities that may not be as physically demanding as time goes by. My wife works in hopsitals and medical facilities and many of the managers and administrators are former RN's who continued on with their education.

And that is so true, on my good days, you wouldn't even know! I run around doing house work, and playing with the kids. I started the low starch diet today, so fingers crossed it works out all good.

It is those days that make it all ok!

Toria, you and your husband sure have a lot to cope with. It must be overwhelming for you both at times. Given that you've been living, studying, parenting and loving through his diagnosis and care, I have a feeling you're both stronger than you think. It's as important now that he have strong medical support for his illness, as he learns to cope with helping you on your bad days.
