I was nervous about taking methotrexate, so I opted for sulfasalazine because it is a little more mild and from what I understand has fewer side effects. I have taken it for 10 days and have broken into hives, lol, apparently I have a sulfa allergy. After the allergic reaction subsides, Im to start methotrexate. Im in the hospital a lot for school, and worried about being immunosupressed, has anyone had issues with getting sick frequently with this drug?

Oh no!  I can't take SSZ because I'm ANA+ so I haven't had the hives. I get those from NSAIDS inside and out! Hives are no fun.  gett better soon!

I've been on mtx for a year and so far haven't been any sicker than usual (with colds etc.) I was afraid I would get sick so was careful around people with colds and flu last winter but didn't catch any of them, thank goodness.

I started MTX in October last year and did fine up till December when I caught a sinus bug and spent most of the winter on antibiotics (and off MTX). BUT, I get at least one sinus infection every winter. Probably got the sinus cleared up and then picked up mycoplasma that was going through my shift in the lab. Once I was on the right antibiotic, that went away and I'm back on MTX doing pretty well. Rheumy just started me on Remicade, so I'm hoping not to get the annual infection this year. Going to do everything in my power to avoid it.
I work in a hospital (lab-chemistry), so understand your fears. Are you in nursing school??
DX: Psoriatic Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Psoriasis
Meds: MTX since Oct 2009, 15mg/week. Cimzia-restarted after 2 yrs away.
Epidural Steroid Injections x8; Lumbar Radiofreq Ablation x2
SIJ Steroid Injection x3; Bilateral Radiofreq Ablation SIJ x9

All I can say is Good Luck on the Metho. I couldn't stand the stuff. But there are a lot on here taking it and its working for them. From what i've seen its trial and error finding what works for YOU. Take care and get to feeling better

I am in nursing school, I graduate in December. My favorite rotation was ER, second favorite peds, both of which you have increased exposure to the acutely ill and contagious.

Sorry you're having such a bad time, cblais.
I was on MTX for over a year and didn't find it affected my immune system at all -not with regards outside influences. It was more my own health that I had problems: I lost a lot of hair, gained weight, generally felt lethargic, not sick, per se.
Overall, it was no bother, but didn't help my AS IMHO.
Sorry if that's disappointing, but we are all different and it may help you. I hope it does.

Perhaps I'm the only one wondering, but why did you decide to title this post "Poo"? It doesn't bother me, and I don't care what title you or anyone else assigns to a posting, but my curiosity has gotten the best of me.

Make sure you wash hands often and avoid putting hands to nose, eyes, mouth where germs can easily enter.

I have an odd sense of humor, it's a coping thing I do. I didn't want to take the MTX so I took the sulfasalazine instead which caused an allergic reaction making me feel worse, so I thought well sh*t, that didn't work, but couldnt title a posting sh*t, as that is inappropriate. . . so as ridiculous as that title is it made me laugh and I decided would offend people less.
