Hi everyone, here is where we are:

In the year 2008, I believe the total operating costs were = $790.00 CND. (Requires verifying with Pete.) This was paid by revenue all from member donations and included server hosting fees, UBBThreads software license renewal fee, plus monthly charges KA was incurring for exceeding bandwidth... but we began the year 2009 $126.28 in the red.

For the year 2009, the total cost of running KA: included server hosting fees to previous and current host - with an overlap of some months where we were paying for both hosts in prep for the move (+ paid for 3 yrs in advance for better deal), host move (paying UBBThreads techie to help Timo), UBBThreads software upgrade/ license fee, plus additional charges for exceeding bandwidth prior to move (dinging us in a range from $10-$40/month), for a total of = $691.30 USD.

We'd actually moved hosts twice last year, once when our first host pushed us out as they were taking their business another direction, the second time was our decision as we desperately needed to control costs as bandwidth charges in Canada were crazy, the USA much cheaper. The second move everyone will remember as we made the investment of upgrading the UBBThreads software version at the same time.

These actions ensured a dramatic cost reduction going forward -- the barebones cost for 2010 will be < $80.00 USD for the year (this has already been paid) but we anticipate spending additional monies for a host upgrade that may bring us in the neighbourhood of $170 USD/yr. Also there is a 'float' of $200 USD required to avoid bank fees.

Apr 15, 2010 $47.75 USD
Apr 15, 2010 $9.31 USD
Apr 15, 2010 $47.75 USD
Apr 15, 2010 $95.80 USD
Apr 14, 2010 $19.12 USD
Apr 14, 2010 $23.97 USD
Apr 14, 2010 $18.92 USD
Apr 14, 2010 $96.80 USD
Apr 14, 2010 $47.75 USD
Apr 14, 2010 $71.77 USD
Apr 12, 2010 $47.75 USD
Apr 12, 2010 $9.31 USD
Apr 11, 2010 $95.80 USD
Apr 10, 2010 $14.26 USD
Apr 10, 2010 $96.80 USD
Apr 10, 2010 $95.80 USD
Apr 09, 2010 $47.75 USD

Mar 26, 2010 $23.72 USD
Mar 19, 2010 $38.14 USD
Mar 16, 2010 $95.80 USD

As of today, due to so many generous donations, KA has received a net total = $1,091.82 clap We have just enough to pay John back and use KA funds to cover the float! Yay! Not much of a buffer yet though.

The team will be working on posting an accounts summary on a regular basis, probably quarterly or semi-annually. Please bear with us, we are working on it for you! smile

Hug of thanks for all who have and are helping our community, whether by donations or by your generous contributions of supporting others by participating on the forums.

Thanks so much!!

That's really good news mig with money still coming in and any money coming in every month we should be able to keep the balance above $200 so avoid charges and get some surplus money.
Well done every one now lets keep it up so we don't have any problems in the future clap clap clap clap

I think regular updates like this are extremely useful and will actually prompt members to donate in future.
I've been here more than 2 years and this is the first time I have seen this kind of information. I would have certainly donated earlier if I'd had an understanding of our financial position before.
Our course, one cannot put a price on the 'in-kind' donations of time. Thanks to the Admin team for all your hard work.

Mig, thank you for this! It really does help us know what is needed and with the updates periodically, we'll be able to help when needed as well as ongoing.

John, knowing that one of our KAers, with so many bills of his own to pay, can be repaid for floating us feels so good. Thank you for that. Hopefully, we will be able to move forward on donations from the membership at large and no-one will have to carry the site alone again.

And my KA family...you guys ROCK! I can't believe how much we've raised amongst us over the past few days!!

Warm hugs,

Kat

Wow! The bandwidth charges in Canada are crazy! I've had a hosting service for about 10 years (mostly for play and testing). I pay $5/month now...so it sounds you've got costs under control.

I'll just throw this idea out as an idea. A friend of mine started the site at this url, http://www.ajaxonomy.com/, a couple of years ago. He added "Ads By Google" to his site. I just took a look at the site and the actual ads occupy a small amount of space. I asked recently how much revenue this collected. He told me about $100/yr. This is more than enough in his case to pay of the hosting expenses. He said he was going to need to take to lunch the others who contribute to his site because he has collected too much money.

Thank you mig
It certainly is encouraging to see this in writing like that.
Transparency makes, contributing to our site a lot easier to put into perspective.
I will need a few days to figure out how to use the donate thingy.
My share will be on the way one way or another.

My I suggest making this post into a sticky for a period of time to allow every one a chance to look at it.

Thanks again mig. That is again another job well done.

Hi Lath. I believe one of the reasons we've grown so much is that people have never been subjected to ads, membership fees or subscriptions.
Absolutely ads can be a boon for other sites and help them keep afloat but I just could not picture Kickas having ads.
