If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

HI, I have been checking out this wonderful site for the last few months and am still in the testing phase of finding out if this is the reason for all of my back, hip, shoulder and neck pain. I am just about 30 yrs old and have had lower back problems since I was about 15 yrs old. To date the testing I have had is HLA B27 blood work, came back positive, x-rays of entire back, no results yet, and then on friday had a SI joint scan and full body scan. Will find out the results of those on the 20th of this month. I have been to the rheumatologist and she said what confused her was that most of my other joints hyper-extend: shoulders, elbows, knees, toes, fingers but then when you get to my back the range of movement is almost non existant.
I am taking an anti-inflammitory called Meloxicam and an a prescription antacid beacause the Meloxicam is really hard on my stomach. I guess my question or what I want to know is does anyone else out there also have problems with their other joints over extending. I am having a really hard time sleeping because I like to sleep on my side but my shoulders are moving in too close and stretching my back muscles too far. Thanks for your time in advance for reading this and any info will be much appreciated.

You sound just like me! I jsut got the HLA B27 test back positive and see the rhuemy on Friday. But I also have hyper extending joints in my hips, elbows, maybe knees, ankles and others.
I hope my rhuemy orders xrays to verify the diagnosis he gave me over the phone.

Good Luck on Friday, I would suggest asking your rhuemy to do a joint scan and a full body scan, I don't know where you live but in Canada it is covered under our medical....They injected me with some kind of radioactive stuff and then sent me away for a couple of hours and then they do the scan to check out the bones and see if there is any growth, I think. I don't have my appointment to see what the results are for a couple more weeks but I am anxious to see what is said. Thank you JIll

Hey Jill, The radioactive injection is supposed to help to show areas of inflammation. The radiologist also explained to me that the problem with that test, is that it can also show old injuries.

Has anyone ever looked at you for a collegen disorder called "Ehlers Danlos"? I have it and my rheumy says that it's been my saving grace when it comes to the AS. I have hyperextending knees, elbows, wrists, and I can dislocate most of my fingers (on purpose, mind you!!). I was originally diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos begine hypermobility, but that diagnosis has been upgraded to the Classic form (where it has a potential to affect my organs). When begine, it is a pretty useful thing to have in conjunction to AS...it helps to keep you limber and it prevents manifestation of perifferal arthritis in small joints. The only down-side is the organ involvment, but that's pretty rare. It's something to look into.
Good Luck,
Nikki

I asked my rheumy about ED syndrome because it occurred to me I might have it. But he thought my hypermobility was unrelated to ED.

Thanks Nikki for the info, I'll ask my dr. about that. That sounds pretty creepy being able to dislocate your fingers just because. My shoulders are my biggest problem right now, the right one will just freeze up for absolutely no reason. I will just wake up in the morning and I can't move it more than and inch. Not very good when you have young children. My baby is 2 today, so luckily I don't have to carry her around as much any more but still not very helpful.
Thanks again, and it is definately something I'll look into. Jill

So, if he thinks that it is unrelated does he know why your joints hyper extend? I am getting really frustrated with this whole medical system I have to say. Not that I want any of these diseases, I just want answers. I don't think that is too much to ask for is it? Thanks for letting me vent. Jill

I think he believes the hypermobility is not always related to ED. Although he might not be up on ED, it does look like there's a lot of variation in the diagnosis. He's supposed to be a good AS doctor though, the people in my local AS support group like him and lots go to him.

You are very lucky to have such a great doctor. I'm still not sure about my rheumy, but I guess time will tell. I hope it didn't sound like I doubted him, I just wondered how he came to the conclusion. Jill
