I just got back from my rheumy, and she has now prescribed me both Methotrexate and Voltaren to try together for a while.

I am a little concerned about all this, as I have read that Methotrexate is on the contraindication list for Voltaren...and I am wondering if I'm getting good advice from my rheumy.

Every time I mention Enbrel, she nods her head, and then goes onto something else...I'm really beginning to wonder about her.

She seems nice, and has been very good with me as a doctor...but I'm just getting such contradictory info from her and from my own research. (now I'm not a doctor, so I'm not an expert in the field...but after 2 degrees, I'm a pretty thorough researcher).

Is anyone else on both of these medications? Can anyone give me some further info or testamonials on this?

As well...both meds state clearly that alcohol should be avoided....I am not a big drinker, but I do like the occasional glass of wine. (My rheumy never even mentioned possible problems with alcohol and these drugs).....

I have had the same reaction from my rhuemy as well. I believe there is a ladder of medications they go through one by one and seem to leave Enbrel for the last or top of the ladder. What she did say was Enbrel and the newer TNF inhibitors are so new that they do not know the long term side effects. On the other hand methotrexate while being a toxic drug is a known drug that has been around for about 30 or 40 years. They know what to expect of it in regards to side affects and seem to prescribe it before you move onto the newer drugs. If methotrexate works, then you stay on it until it stops working and then move onto another drug. That is my take on it anyways. I have asked for it my last 2 appts. and she said we know those drugs are there if we need them, but for now we are going to try other things.
I was on methotrexate for 7 weeks and it didn't seem to help so she told me to go off it. Good luck and I hope it does the trick for you.

There is no drug stronger than a good attitude.
