There have been several clinical trials and new companies manufacturing pin-like devices to fuse the SIJ's. For those with chronic SIJ pain whose SIJs refuse to fuse, what do you think? There are several youtube videos that show the procedure. Obtaining a CPT code "legitimizes" the procedure versus experimental.

"Minimally invasive sacroiliac joint fusion surgery obtained a Category I CPT code beginning January 1, 2015. The new payment code could encourage more payers to reimburse for the procedure."

snow- as I am considering my major surgery, I will watch this video and when I do go in ask the Dr. about this.

I am so stiff I might as well be fused?????

Nice to see you. How are you feeling?
after every snow we have a nice thaw. But the mountains where I hunt are very dry.....

Well I guess my even looking into this option tells alot. But, so far the clinical studies have excluded people with AS and those with bilateral sacroiliitis. I presume they want to show some positive results and maybe we're too problematic to study initially though AS patients could be their biggest market in the future.

Lon, it looks like you could do this SI fusion procedure with a good drill and screws at home laugh2 Do you know if you're SI joints have already fused? I remember mixed responses from our KA members whose SIJs fused from AS--some no longer had pain and others continue to have it so that's one reason to carefully consider these procudures before jumping in.

We've had a faux winter!

Adding this video. It's longer but worth it for anyone considering this. Discussion with a surgeon with some interesting points about SI joints

Snow- do you think I should go with a half inch drill or the 3/8?

It does seem like a winner. Funny how drilling a hold through bone huts less than the AS before the surgery.

One side is partially used. there for my skeleton rocks a bit on my base...then I have 3 joints fused...

How is your thinker doing? I have had some confusion around the house.
But still working part time.

I had a chance in conversation to ask 3 doctors of different but related specialties what they thought of this surgery (none perform this procedure). Reserved caution in general due to relative limited long term experience. And they agree with what's stated in the video that picking the right patient and clearly identifying that pain is from SI joints is most important.

One told me that it may not work for AS however as mentioned AS and patients with bilateral SIJ pain have been excluded from studies. Even though this procedure sounds simple and low risk, I'd be hesitant to try it until proven that it helps with AS-related SIJ problems. It would be great if proven to help but at this point seems to be most helpful for specific SIJ mechanical problems.

But Lon, if you do try it with your drill, please report your results here! eek
