Hi,

I am suffering from AS since last 10 years. I have just read the London AS Diet and found it very interesting.

I found protiens like beef, lamp or chicken are safe to eat. But I have also found breads, grains, chappatis are not safe.

So please let me know how can i eat anything with bread, rice or chappatis?

I am from India, and generally we eat anything with rice, chappatis or bread.

If you just want to try the low starch diet first, rather than be strictly no starch, then you could keep in a bit of rice in your diet. Seems to be something that is tolerated better than other grains, and particularly a lot better than processed grains (flour, bread)

I was a meat and potato guy (along with bread and corn), so I understand your problem. However, pain motivated me to go strict no-starch, and the results have kept me NSD. Check the recipes and this site, and give it a go.

I started out replacing potatoes and pasta with plenty of rice, and that didn't prevent flares. It is mostly people who are doing quite well report being able to eat rice without losing the benefit of low-starch diet -- such as Zark and Dragonslayer, who both were strict for years during the early stage of healing up gut inflammation. That's why Dragonslayer is not encouraging eating rice now, because he had to give it up for years in order to get to where he is now.

On the other hand, it is not totally black-and-white; eating a small amount of rice is probably better than eating large amount of rice. While switching to rice as a "safer" starch didn't do anything for me versus my previous typical diet, my *worst* flares have always followed pigging out on very starchy holiday foods. So in my experience, cutting down to small amounts of rice will allow a moderate amount of inflammation to continue, but it could prevent a big flare with very elevated inflammation levels (which for me, spreads symptoms from the normal joints-only problems to other parts of my body including iritis of the eye).

I was thinking the same... but knife rather than spoon.

On the serious side, I eat all my grilled meat with lots of salads now. Produce here in Argentina is so fresh and so good.

In States I ate a lot of stir fries with bean sprouts rather than rice. Loved them... used Worchestershire sause... that never bothered me despite label being a little iffy.

Best to you,

Tim

Hello, a lot of people do find that they can tolerate rice, so you might just keep it in your diet in small amounts for the time being until you adjust.

Also, you can still have the sauces you're accustomed to, I think. Garam Masalas tend not to have actual starches in them, being made of herbs and spices, and they're usually mixed with yoghurt or tomato based sauces, yes? So you can still have the flavours you're accustomed to (assuming that masala is a basic ingredient in your home cooking). But you'll also find that grilled chicken and steamed vegetables, or vegetables prepared in some other way you enjoy is also very filling. Try yam instead of potato and see how that works. It will take some imagination on your part to find new ways of eating (especially since I know how good Indian food can be!!) but experiment with it and you'll find your way.

Hugs,
