So I am ready to start weight training and have not a clue how to eat for it with AS. Does anyone else weight train? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, Alida1:

I do weight lifting with NSD/LSD and there is nothing to it--eating more protein and fats is in fact the best thing for exercise. However, if a newbie to the LSD I would recommend getting branched chain amino acids and do at least 500mg Glutamine 3X daily with unsweetened Concord grape juice.

AS affects every muscle, including heart, and we are 15% weaker than normal and have less endurance than average due to cellular-level changes as a result of AS. So keep inflammation away through exercise and diet.

HEALTH,
John

Good idea with starting weight training. Staying physically fit and strong is an important part of kicking AS. Weight training increases glucose requirements as muscle glycogen stores are used during intense exercise and carbohydrates are important for recovery from intense exercise. If avoiding starches then increasing intake of simple sugars (such as grape juice) will help recovery.

I forgot to mention that in order get stronger or gain muscle you do not need to lift really heavy weights. Heavy weights can increase risk of injury without offering benefits as some studies have found that doing more repitions with a lighter weight is more effective. You should be able to do at around 10 repetitions before it starts to get really hard.

Hi,
I am on Remicade and feels better. Whenever I lift material more that 3 kg I feel pain. Hence, I avoid lifting anything weighing more than 3 kg. Whether exercise, slowly increasing the weight being lifted, will be of use to overcome this problem.

Regards.
Jay

I am also on remicade and its amazing. Im into fitness Almost on a crazy level but my body tells me when enough is enough. I do cardio, pilates then weight train. I never push myself with weights like jroc said go light and do more. Just listen to your body and dont do more than you can. I flare when i over do it even on remicade.
