Bravo Ricky! I agree, doctors are people too. Like in any relationship, we are responsible for our half of it. If we wish to be treated with consideration and respect, we should demonstrate the same towards our docs... communication is key in building up any good relationship.

Doctors may not have all the answers that we seek at times but most doctors do just want to help if they can. I wish I had all the answers too... but hey, who does?

I once had an appt with an ophthalmologist who was running late and I was kept waiting for 1 hr. Apologizing as he rushed into the exam room, I cut him off and expressed concern that he was so busy that I bet he had missed his own lunch and hadn't had a moment to himself all day. He stopped in his tracks and looked sooo relieved and smiled gratefully - relieved to find a patient who wasn't irate (like the previous 10 probably were) but who was actually thinking of him for two seconds. Me being idle for 1 hr was little hardship in comparison to the emerg surgery someone really needed earlier that morning.

Nice to find a positive post on this topic. Sharing our positive experiences probably doesn't get enough air-time!

Great Post, I do believe this should be on the main forum. Think about it, Docs put many years and money they don't have, into education, internship, residency, specialty. When most have moved on with life, and family, they are still studying, and practicing for a life of healing the sick. Most of us would balk and complain if we had to work the hours most docs do, but expected to be super human. Doctors get just as frustrated as we do when a diagnosis can't be found or a surgery doesn't work out, after all, they spent 10 to 15 years "learning medicine". People must remember that docs are human not super human. Next time you see one of you docs, stop and ask him how he's doing.

I am as you can tell a big believer in positivity. As much as I feel it's important to share our problems and get thing's off our chest, I also feel it's just as important to share the good things that happen too.

Edifying words. Nice. Easy to destroy or tear down. A bit more work ( and occcasional restraint) to buid up and nurture.
Relationships work that way too.

Really nice job on this Ricky!! Was really thoughtful, and also provoking.
I find the biggest problem for docs in the US is that in order to function in this completely dysfunctional healtcare infrastructure, and let's face it, to make a decent living, they are forced to fly in and out of seeing patients and don't have the kind of time to spend the way they would like. I really hope and pray things change in the coming years to improve this. I think that in itself would go a long way to facilitating better dr./patient partnerships.

You are right Mig, kindness matters regardless if we are treated well or not. We have no idea what Dr.s go through. We have the right to move on or stay. I have some good ones who are personable and even let me e-mail them and some that are just cut and dried and nothing but the facts ma'am. Some I have ran for my life from.

I know I couldn't be a Dr. I would empathize too much and never even get to the next patient. I would however be into research. My mothers Dr. told her once, at one cross-road in his life, he made the decision to remain single as he knew being a Dr. would cost him a lot and that he didn't want the cost to be his family and being a Dr. meant everything to him. That has always stuck with me.
