Swimming is one of the best for AS. One can live in fear or one can LIVE.

Umm... that article doesn't refer to pools, but outdoor public beaches as far as I can tell. A properly maintained public pool contains the correct pH and chlorine balance to kill anything harmful.

ALSO: reading the article properly, this it only states that they have developed new technology to detect e. coli presence, not that they have discovered higher levels of e. coli anywhere. If anything this should increase your confidence in terms of being aware of when the water is and when it could be contaminated.

I think you should be careful with how you present things because it is unwise to discourage people with AS from such a beneficial and enjoyable activity as swimming.

There was another article, samples from swimming pools and also from those whizzie hot tub pools - all contaminated. Must see if I can find it.

Interestingly, I spoke about this last January with a rheumy professor here in France. She also said that she would never get into a swimming pool either...!

You could not pay me to get into a swimming pool.

As for 'discouraging' anyone from using swimming pools - think that that does not happen - go visit 'Go team' here...they are amazing. Swimming everywhere. But, for 'me', I will not enter a swimming pool. Others can take the risk -

One country whom I think you can trust for utter cleanliness, would be Japan. They are scrupulous in complete showering before entering a pool and in after exiting from a pool. Would be vaguely interesting to compare/contrast various countries as to skin infections and gastro infections and exacerbated eye problems and ear infections in relation to public use swimming pools and hot tubs.

Well that is your choice. However, I think that you are greatly over-estimating the risks, especially regarding large public swimming pools. I cannot speak for small hot-tubs or spas, but public swimming pool are exceedingly safe.

They are highly chlorinated, and if anything the chlorine probably provides a bigger health risk.

While that is an impressive array of articles, most of them are irrelevant or clearly state that the risks are preventable. Many of them are simply lists of procedures to follow in case of pool fouling.

The risks of getting sick from poop in a swimming pool are much smaller than the risks that come with being sedentary.
