Hi everyone
I have come to my wits end with severe groin pain for the last 3 years. The pain was chronic for 2 years and has eased off a bit during the last year. The pain is at its worst when driving. I have lost a lot of weight and muscle tone due to not being able to do a lot of exercise. Even swimming became a problem. I have seen various doctors and physios and they have all drawn a blank. My rheumatologist has suggested that the groin pain could be referred pain from the SI joint . I have been reluctant to jump to this conclusion as it is all too easy to blame all the aches and pains on AS. Since I can get the groin pain without any pain elsewhere can this really be referred pain. Also, since driving seems to make it worse or bring it on, can this still be due to AS?
Has anyone had a similar experience to this?
Regards,
Oli

it's my story of the last 4/5 years........it's problems with the hips and SI joints most likely.when there is a weakness in the hips the groin area is the first to give

my problem is it takes months to heal properly.i am supposed to strengthen the hips which in turn will strengthen the groin but the thing is the slightest knock/bump/twist the wrong way sets me back WEEKS at a time!

oh post 1!? welcome Oli smile

ps try and slowly build up your hip and leg strength/muscle

NONSENSE!

The groin pain is probably due to pubic symphysitis that is quite common with advancing AS. The local inflammation is just another part of the overall pelvic inflammation characteristic of AS, and it can be eliminated along with the other symptoms of active AS whenever You go into remission.

AS is like that--sometimes pain in only one place, other times in many places and sometimes only IBS while other times iritis with few other issues.

Yes, I have had it and specific activities do seem to make it worse.

I'm doing maximum weight on the leg-spreader weight machines just to prove to myself that I remain AS-inactive.

HEALTH,
John

I had severe groin pain for about 2 yrs. from a worn out hip joint. Had a total replacement and have not had any since.

Hi

My Rheumy always told me the groin pain is referred pain from my hip. I think you should see an orthopedic guy.Have they X-rayed your hip ?

Thanks to you all for taking the time to reply.
To answer Janet, yes I have had it x-rayed. They also ultrasound and mri scanned it too. I had hoped the mri would have been definitive, but didn't give any answer. Since nothing seems to ease the pain (arcoxia ineffective) bar strong painkillers, the consultant has offered anti tnf. But since I am not 100% convinced its AS am unsure about goin down that route, especially as my AS isn't advanced. I had assumed it would just go away, but after a good patch it still seems to rear its ugly head. Very frustrating. Thanks again,
Oli

i used to have a very good PT who could determine which tendon or ligament was causing my pains, and then was good at treating it.

now its my chiro who seems to be most skilled at this sort of thing.

haven't had groin pain, so can't say specifically what might cause that. but guessing its some enthesitis in the area.

hope you sort it out soon. hugss
