Rapid response to adalimumab (Humira) was the strongest predictor of sustained remission among patients with ankylosing spondylitis, a long-term extension study found.
On multivariate analysis, patients with this inflammatory arthritis of the spine who achieved partial remission by week 12 of treatment had a hazard ratio of 2.49 (95% CI 1.40 to 4.43, P=0.002) for maintaining that degree of response up to 5 years, according to Joachim Sieper, MD, of University Clinic Benjamin Franklin in Berlin, and colleagues.
And those who reached a state of inactive disease by 3 months had a hazard ratio of 3.18 (95% CI 1.83 to 5.53, P<0.001) for maintaining remission, Sieper and colleagues reported in the May Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.
The Assessment in Spondyloarthritis International Society recommends that response to anti-tumor necrosis factor treatment be assessed at 3 months to determine if the therapy should be continued.
